The gold is an alloy of copper and silver which will oxidise or tarnish and that’s why the colour changing. Perfectly normal (google the Rolex Black Star to see an extreme example!!).

Hi Lgear080/Hub6152,
Thanks for your reply, so the discoloration is normal due to aging? This is my 1st automatic Rolex DJ from/borrowed from my dad. :) At the moment he’s not wearing it when he moved to a new home, so he gave permission :) to wear it just to get the internal parts moving. Purchased in Feb 1990 and have been left in the dark/safe for the past 3+ years. Was hoping to get it polish or probably change the watch hands so that it looks new again. Some corotion / bubbling on the hour/minute/second hands. I presumed this is due to aging too? Still has the Box/certs/papers/booklet that comes with it. |

Hub6152,
You are RIGHT about the extreme oxidized Rolex Black Star. The hour/minute/second hands looks corroded on mine and I couldn’t find a sample from google that looks like it. And I find it weird, why only happens to the watch hands but not the rest like the linen dial/markers? https://imgur.com/a/qWnaY5E http://i65.tinypic.com/mvi3de.jpg |

The corrosion on the hands is very common. It’s part of the character of the ageing of the watch and not something I’d be worried about. The tarnishing of the gold can easily be polished away, as it’s only a surface tarnish, but again it’s all adding character to the watch and something I’d just leave as it is.

Corrosion on the hands is not patina, in my books.
I would change the hands and leave the rest as it is.

I have just recently experienced discolouration of my datejust bracelet.
It happened on the first day of vacation after swimming in the sea. For 15 years, prior to a servicing at a licensed Rolex retailer in 2017, I wore my Rolex watch everywhere. I have swam with it in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Over that time, nothing occurred, so I find it perplexing that my gold bracelet would change colour now, on the first time wearing my watch in the sea following the 2017 servicing. But the most puzzling part that I do not understand is why the gold in the bracelet and crown changed colour but not the gold in the bezel (nor my gold rings which were also worn in the water). I was so concerned with the colour change that I consulted with the hotel jeweller as well as a local official Rolex retailer and they each assured me that there is nothing wrong with the water and that they have never seen anything like this. The local Rolex retailer offered to send the watch to Rolex for inspection. However, I declined and informed him that I prefer to take it back home to where it was purchased. It has been almost 6 weeks now and I have yet to get an answer from my Rolex retailer as to what has happened to my watch bracelet. I have tried to attach photos, however, I was informed that they are too big to attach. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Frustrated and Watchless in Toronto |
