Need help choosing a 1016 from 2 choices

This one is complete and would cost less:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CMvJGuZLz6a/

This one has more patina on the numbers:
https://sagatrading.co/1974-rolex-explorer-1016

I know i've been looking at this watch for a while, but need some help deciding which of the two is a better buy. There's probably things about the two I have no idea about. Thanks

First one is on eBay. That’s a service dial, I’m pretty sure.

I assume you’ve already checked out this excellent site:

First one does not look like a complete set to me. It looks like a wrong box for a 1976 1016 and a service card. Random seller.

The second — Have researched this seller?

This is an attainable watch. I would just buy the seller if I were you.

I agree, but:

Do as much of your own research as you can. Even reputable dealers are sometimes listing 1016s with undisclosed shortcomings (to put it nicely).

I’ve had mine for over thirty years. I love it still. Don’t settle, if you can avoid it.

Agree that the card and box are not important. The card is just a service warranty card and the box is definitely younger than the watch. Buying the seller is more important.

Thanks for the link! Great to hear you've had it for 30 years and still love it, that says a lot!

Indeed. And in the case of this 1976 “full set” with incorrect full set items, you can consider NOT buying this seller. I’ve always felt that if a seller is either wrong or misleading about one or more points, then what else is wrong that hasn’t been disclosed. Of course, there are the instances of a perfectly good example, but the seller legitimately not knowing something has been changed.
So, yes, buy the seller...but ALSO buy the watch by virtue of research, research, and more research.

Those are both mk3 dials and the problem with those are that they were used as original on a 70s watch and on later 8 mil serials, and as service. The patina is the differenting factor here. If it is white or light vanilla on a 1976 watch, most likely service dial as some have already said. The problem is also with the hands as some originals from early 70s have handsets from earlier models in the late 60s (shorter hands, luminous dot on seconds hand is lower) and some have newer longer hands and high luminous on seconds hand which rolex started using in the 70s.

Here is mine, dont even know if it is the real deal anymore :)

If you like the second one, Skip from Sagatradingco is a very honest and knowledgable guy, he has a small inventory but good quality

You can't go wrong with a 1016. I bought this new in the early 80's, its my favorite, and is worn as intended, swimming, skiing, cycling. If its on my wrist, it does what I do.

I bought mine new in 1967 and has been a constant companion and the foundation of my collection. I can't advise on the two you're looking at but if not these, don't give up.

I like the patina on the second version, and it's from the year 1974. Skip's been very helpful in answering my questions. I prefer to wear my watches 24/7 and not have to worry about taking it to the shower. One less thing to think about.

Understandably there's no guarantee on the water thing, but according to those specs, how safe is it take in the shower?

I noticed other guys here have the 1016, never had issues with mist in the shower? Thanks

That 3 ba pressure test is neglible. I wouldn't be getting it wet if I could avoid it. A watch with a 3 bar rating is basically splash resistant. If it had passed a 5 or 10 bar pressure test, presumably they would have shown you that printout. Originally it would have been water resistant to approximately 10 bar (100m), which is suitable for swimming, etc. Many of my vintage Rolex watches in oyster cases will pass a 50m or 100m pressure test, so there could be an issue with this one. If you buy it, plan on keeping it out of the water IMO.

As @airansun mentioned, you might want to do some basic research into these issues, you can't just rely on what other people on the internet tell you or don't tell you.

That's on ebay so if you want it you better act quick. It's definitely not unpolished.
