Is it OK to Demagnetize a watch?

I ordered a demagnetizer.
Have not received it yet.

Can doing the process damage or harm your watch in any way?

Some recommend that the watch not be running while doing the procedure. This would mean having the crown pulled out to stop the seconds hand.

Anyone done this and thoughts on the matter?

I’ve done it to a few watches, maybe 6 or 7. Never stopped the watch to do it and I’ve never had any issues.

When I put a watch on the scope and its showing weird numbers, the first thing I do is demagnetize. Wont hurt anything

I had a few watches demagnetized last week. You're supposed to do it rapidly, so I think the question is more so how you demagnetize them vs whether you do in the first place.

There are a bunch of YouTube video on it.
I just got the unit in the mail. No instructions in the box. The unit is made in China.
It was easy. I did pull out the crown to stop it.

Same as others, I have done it many times with those cheap $9 devices without issue. As far as the way I do it.. I hold the watch by the bracelet and put the dial over the demagnetizer. Press the button and hold down while slowly moving the watch away from the demagnetizer. About 4 feet away, I let the button go. Works great on my older watches.

I have had good success with the blue Chinese unit on a couple of brands.
Haven’t had the need to de-mag a Rolex yet.

I used a compass on a 5 Digit GMT once because I suspected it might be slightly magnetised and sure enough the compass needle moved slightly when placed near the watch.
It was also running slightly fast which is what made me check it in the first place.
Bought one of those blue Chinese de magnetisers from eBay and voila! Problem solved.
Watch has been fine ever since.

Possibly a dumb question, but how do I know if my watch needs to be demagnetized?

Place a compass next to it and see if it attracts the compass needle. If it does, it’s magnetised.

If it's running really fast, that's a tell-tale sign it's magnetized.

It runs really fast if it's magnetized. Not just +10 sec/day. More like +50 sec/day means magnetized.
