Speedie - 4 yrs or 35 yrs old?
Hey all, i recently purchased a 2003 Speedie Pro which arrived yesterday, however to my dismay the condition was not as described bhy the seller (came covered in scratches, looked to be a daily beater on a building site. I contacted the seller and will be getting a full refund so whilst licking my wounds yesterday i began searching for a replacement and have been offered the following:
Old:
New:
Given the choice, which would other members go for? Both are priced roughly the same, is the fact the older one is a birth year makes it too hard to resist or should i place safe and go for the recent example with added papers? Any input is greatly appreciated. |

I have a sapphire sandwich.
IMO unless you are after a 321 I would choose the latest model in either twin sapphire or the discontinued sapphire/hesalite.

So you're saying there is nothing between the 2 models so plump for the safe option? Should we expect the 70's model to be priced lower then given the missing papers?

I would choose vintage. Papers are nice, but not a deal breaker on an (almost) 40 year old watch.

I'm not much of a vintage guy. I prefer to buy new watches and let them age with me. Soon enough we will both be vintage

Vintage... Maybe.
There's so many new speeds about, so the vintage would be more "unique".

IMO there is nothing special about a "-74". The "-74" on the caseback only means that the caseback was manufactured in 1974.
On the other hand, the newer model will have good lume (Luminova, not faded tritium), an extra jewel, hefty modern bracelet, and a rhodium plated movement - all in all, a better quality watch. Fr. John† |

A '76 speedie on a 1171 bracelet in excellent condition newly serviced will be one sweet watch and my choice

Can we see some pictures? I've seen some described as "excellent" condition Speedmasters that IMHO were a moldy gross rotting mess!!! Also someone's "complete overhaul" might not be what you are use to... Also...What is your price range? There are some "deals" out there on new watches. Depending on your price range PM me. Mick |

Yeah, pictures and/or links would help, you have already had one deal go bad.
If things like functioning lume are important go modern Also make sure you don't get a bracelet stretch to hell, that affects value greatly.... |

Thanks all for taking the time to input into this thread, quite a split in opinion which can only mean one thing......i'm a winner in either scenario!
Having weighed up the options i've decided it just has to be the birth year Speedie so i've asked them to put it on hold for me. These things just don't come round very often and nothing cooler than a birth year Speedie really (well there is but you know what i mean!). Worst case scenario they are offering a 48 hour return policy so if it doesn't quite match up to expectations then it can easily be undone. This is the offending watch, for those interested in seeing: http://www.watchesofdistinction.com/...No%20145022.76 or ? |

It looks good...ask about bracelet stretch and if it is as "polished" as it looks. I personally wish the hands matched the dial more... |

Yeah little over $2.5k by my calculation. The band doesn't look to have too much stretch but you can never tell when set up for a photo.
To add, do the hands look to be a replacement? |

lol, no i was just saying 101% sounds like you are pretty certain they are replacement. I'd have to agree, they stand out like beacons against the dial

I would...there is always room there for them to go down. Recently I almost pulled the trigger on a Tudor Tiger and the website (well known) had it for $2500.00. I told them too rich for me "what's your best price no messing around". They went down $2000.00!!! You always have to ask... |

Sound advice, you don't ask you don't get. Nothing to lose.

Good call on the birth year Speedy...I've always wanted a birth year watch (either a Sub or Speedy). You can always just pick up a newer one...but passing this one up would have probably led to regret.
Congrats. |

Not wrong there mate, I've regretted a few things in life and this would have certainly added to that list so had to be done. Should be completing the transaction tomorrow then I'll post up pics one I receive it. Thanks all for the input, really appreciate it.

Jeepers, i recently bought a sapphire sandwich new at Omega AD for USD $2,500.00
Are they getting that expensive? I may have to pick up another at my next AD annual sale. |

I had both. Had a 1976 vintage (my birth year) but hard times forced me to sell it. Mike the moderator here bought it from me in 2006.
I now have a modern one with the 1861, which I like equally. Given the fact that the watches look identical from the front, I would go with the old one. I like the look of the old caliber better, before they started to rhodium plate them.

Between these two I would go with the more current model unless the birth year piece is absolutely perfect. Honestly though, a nice birth tear piece won't come around every day while a 2007 Speedy will (unless it's a 3572.50).
