Holiday Movies

Yup, it's that time of year. Same old, same olds on the tube. So, I'm wondering if you have any favorites Holiday/Christmas themed movies that are a little off the beaten path. We all know the old standards, but wondering if any of you might have a recommendation on something a bit less well known.

Obviously, all suggestions are welcome, but really looking for something suitable for the entire family.

For example, one I came across a few years ago and liked was, 'The Man who Invented Christmas'. I rather fanciful story about Charles Dickens and his inspiration for writing, 'A Christmas Carol'.

The Christmas Chronicles (2018). I wont give away the plot but suggest you check it out! Heart warming story about a family and a bit of a tear-jerker. But then again, I’m a female who can get misty eyed when given a good Hallmark card.

I don’t know. Around here it’s the standards for sure. Home Alone has been played 642 times already by the kiddos. My wife has watched the same story unfold on hallmark 100 times too….. Regular woman leaves her big city fashion designer job for a week to visit her hometown. Meets very handsome Christmas Tree farmer who teaches her the true spirit of Christmas……and…..(dare I say? Dare! Dare!)……LOVE! After an internal struggle over her future, she leaves Springswaterfordsdale to head back to the city for an emergency client fitting only to realize she can’t be away from him! (Known him for 4 days). Drops her entire life and moves to the country to live with him and start a baby food business. And they lived happily ever after. Okay the last part was sort of stolen from Baby Boom but you get the picture. Anyway hope there are some winners proposed moving forward….

Are you talking about the one where the person goes back to their quaint hometown and falls in love again, or the one where the big city type goes to someone else's quaint hometown and falls in love again?

My bride and I recently watched this one again. It's 35 years old and it still holds up.

This…one of my wife’s favorites, and we watch it every year during the holidays.

I’m an annual“Elf” guy myself….Will Ferrell in his wheelhouse. My kids roll their eyes and clear the room every year when I put it on…..but I will NOT be shamed.

Yep, for me the old standards are those I knew when I grew up in the sixties and seventies and those just happen to be mostly before 1950 or so.

One of my faves.... Holiday Inn

PS: Unlike today's 2-second shots to shot to shot to shot, notice how long the takes are. Talent.

There is, of course, only one, Christmas movie.

Frank Capra's timeless masterpiece.

As a kid, we’d watch The Sound of Music as a family.

My dad sang in a gospel quartet for 65 years and music was part of our home.

I've started to enjoy Four Christmases a little more each year. I remember being unimpressed when I saw it in the theater when it was released, but it seems to have aged well.

For some reason I can never turn Elf off, even though I've seen in a dozen times at least.

Bad Santa for after the kids go to sleep LOL
