Grand Seiko GMT quartz sbgn001-3-5...

I’ve been looking at these online and really like the aesthetics, especially the thinner profile. I haven’t handled any yet, but planning to visit an AD soon.

I’m not anti-quartz, but I really appreciate the mechanical marvel of automatics. I’m also an admitted tech nerd and own a spring drive that I love, but it is on the thicker side (proportionally). I also have a Casio Oceanus white dial solar/titanium/Chrono/world time/alarm, that is thin enough, and a great beater, but working the complications are far from convenient. Other Grand Seiko autos seem to be a little thicker than I would prefer as well.

Are there any other references I should look at that may fit the desired envelope I’ve described above?

Besides those above, I am also considering the Rolex explorer2.

GMT+Lume are +++

Does anyone here have input on GS, Or other brands?

Thanks!

The SBGN series wear very similarly to my Explorer. They may resemble the Exp 2 given the numbered bezel on 001, 003 and 005 but are the same size and thickness and weight of the Explorer. The 007 is visually more similar to the Explorer given its smooth bezel.

I love the series and have both the 005 and the 007. And in fact both see slightly more wrist time than the Explorer or my DJ. Even with the EZlink I can't get the Explorer bracelet to fit as well as the GS due to the 0.6 links on the GS bracelet allowing a more accurate fit. On the Oyster I have pulled 2 links and on the 005 and 007 have pulled one full link and one 0.6 link.

One big advantage of the 9F movement is that you can use it to set your Rolexes weekly or so. And I promise that having to do that makes one less enamored of a pure mechanical watch. If the Rolex mechanical movement was so good it would be more accurate. My 007 has the more accurate movement of +/- 5 sec/year. The 005 has the normal +/- 10 sec/year and they both observe near perfect accuracy. My Explorer and DJ are more like +/-4 sec/day with one being consistently fast and one being consistently slow. At any rate they both get near 30 sec off every week or so.

Don’t know if I’m allowed to do this but there’s a good comparison with the explorers and SBGE245 in the below.

Thanks for your comments.

The 007 doesn’t have lume, right?

It does not. Just different price points and what you prefer. Good luck though

I do like that 245. I wish it was thinner. I have a couple big watches and really think I would like the smaller size of the sbgn’s. Hopefully the AD has some inventory to look at.

Found this one at an AD in Indy. They had a good selection that made it hard to stick with the SBGN. The SBGT241 was tempting, but I really had my mind/heart set on this one. Noticeably smaller than I usually wear. I’m very happy with it after 1 day :)

I tried the 003 at the weekend at the Sydney AD , just a beautiful watch up close, loved the case size and profile, it’s on my list for next purchase
