Police Officer William Mathews was struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 12, between Route 101 and Shoreline Drive, at approximately 12:30 pm today.

He was in the process of removing debris from the roadway when a vehicle struck him. The driver of the car that struck him was arrested and charged with criminal vehicular homicide.

Officer Mathews had served with the Wayzata Police Department for nine years. He is survived by his wife and 7-year-old son.

Yes, and the driver has roughly 15 convictions on her record (drugs, driving, theft, DUI). Tragic that she was on the roads at all. At least half of those 15 were driving with a revoked license offenses.

I would love to see cars become more computerized and linked to the cloud so the ignition wouldn't even function when someone like this got behind the wheel.

RIP Officer Matthews. I grew up in Wayzata Mn. A beautiful and quiet little town on the shores on Lake Minnetonka. I know that stretch of road like the back of my hand.

So sorry to hear Ken, I've done the exact same thing that he was doing probably hundreds of times without ever giving it a second thought. Such a tragic event.
