iOS 11: Beware

I was on my iPad (Air 2) tonight and saw that iOS 11 was available to download.
I must have experienced a moment of temporary insanity because I went ahead and downloaded it.
As a result, my iPad has slowed tremendously and crashes every few minutes.
I normally wait a week or two on updates to allow them to work out the bugs. Wish I had done that tonight.

Hmm, hopefully you get sorted out, can you restore from your computer to an earlier backup?

I noticed some lag and choppy animations. As well as some UI bugs. I believe these will be worked out by the time the X is released, which I will be preordering on Oct 27! Can't wait for it. Definitely a great refresh. Getting tired of the minimal design changes.

No problems here. I have it on both iPhones and iPad.

Try a fresh install. Reset everything and restore from a backup

Apple is reminding you that your iPad is obsolete....

just in case you were thinking of not getting a new iPad

I’ve been beta testing OS 11 for a month or two and it’s been pretty great. Haven’t had any problems to speak of.

It works fine on my iPhone 7 (I've been running beta since day one) but I'm reluctant to put it on my iPad mini 2 because of this.

My iPad air is over 4 years old and still runs fast no issues except maybe battery degradation as it seems to burn down faster. I think I'll skip this update. Although I'm not sure what's being added to the update. Best thing I ever did was go to all apple products. It just so easy with great quality

iOS 11: Beware

It’s running fine even on an old iPhone6 for me.

I do have a ritualistic protocol developed from years of experience. Sharing only in spirit of the community. If you haven’t gone to iOS 11 yet and you’re conservative, maybe wait it out. I’m having to get ready for the Apple Watch 3/LTE so 11 was a requirement for number sharing.

Here’s my protocol:
1) use a computer with iTunes. But don’t download new iOS yet.
2) update iTunes to latest version.
3) sync photo’s and video’s to the computer
4) update all Apps on the iphone/iPad that need updating
5) force quit all open apps on the device
6) do full back-up and sync all data (yes, again)
7) reset network settings on the device
8) reboot the device (power+home buttons)
9) download iOS update and run it.

If you find you are too low on memory - you can always off load the photo’s and video’s to make room. Then add them back from your backup.

This will eliminate several sources of hang-ups during updates. If you like to update over the Air, and use iCloud for backup, then this isn’t for you...

Screwed up my iPhone 7 Plus big time

So generally works fine, then occasionally when opening the camera it stays on a black screen

Last night the entire phone stopped responding. I could unlock it but couldn’t swipe between screens, no icons would work, power button wouldn’t restart the phone, couldn’t do a hard reset even... until I tried volume plus power.

I’ve had iPhones since the very first 3G model. Never had an issue with software like this. Guess it was my time.

Oh course!

I hadn't realised or needed to do a hard reset until now. Had the phone since release.

That is my practice as well with iOS updates.

Usually, what I will do is first read what changes are made with the update. If only a few, or some simple security upgrade usually go ahead and download.

For this update, however, based on the amount of changes to be made will wait a week or two before downloading to allow Apple time to address and remedy any issues after the initial release.

Good suggestion Renato, and I may go that route.
After sitting overnight my Air 2 has stabilized. Not sure why as I believe the install was complete last night.
I’m going to work with it today and see how it goes.

My employer always asks that we hold off while our tech folks work thru the work related apps/functions to make sure they will work with the new iOS.

I have not been given the green light to download yet. But will likely wait s little while anyhow. I have a 6+ and really don't want to upgrade as they will only do a 7, not a plus.

All good on my iPhone 7. The only thing that didn’t work was my ringtone I bought back in 2008. I bought another version that isn’t as good, but the problem is solved.

Everything else so far is working fine. My iPad mini 2 is all good as well.

Adding one more thing (at least for now)...

If you are on iOS 11 and have AirPods - make sure to go into settings and update your command choices. IOS 11 now has separate commands for the left and right pods.

If not, Siri interaction or whatever you had set for “double taps” in iOS 10 can cause issues.

Settings>Bluetooth>AirPods (click the “i” icon) and make your choices

Apple updates have a track record of slowing down older models. Not sure if that's going on here, but it would surprise me.

As I noted in my prior post, there's a lot going on with this update. Not sure the extent to which I'll benefit from.

My business partner just updated a few days ago. He's been complaining ever since. I am NOT looking forward to it... Also cannot understand why they force the update. SIDEBAR: Any opinions out there about the new iPhone X?
