Conundrum Red Blend 2014

Pretty good red blend for $23-$25 price range...

Winemaker Notes

The winery continues the tradition of bending the rules with Conundrum Red. Serious yet down-to-earth, this wine knows no boundaries. Created from dark red varietals including Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, this wine offers layers of rich flavor that slowly trails off. Behold and serve slightly chilled.

Ordered some 375ml bottles of Champaign for my Wife as full bottle is just too much most of the time. The ratings were good so we are giving them a try. A few reds showed up today too!

Amazing dinner tonight with hickory smoked prime rib, garlic mashed white sweet potatoes, garden green beans and an incredible array of 2012 Napa Cabernets. Wines are pictured in the order of most to least favorite after tasting before dinner and with dinner.

Yes, it was enjoyed with great company. An old high school/college friend of mine and I realized a few year ago that it'd been too long since we got together so we decided to make it interesting and set up a series of bets on the Super Bowl, and playoffs for the NBA, NHL, MLB, and College Football. Each loser had to buy a $100+ bottle of 2012 Napa Cab and got to pick first on the next bet. Whoever lost 3 out of 5 or more had to also buy plane tickets to visit the winner. My wife and I won, so David and Alli came out to visit.

We bought the Janzen and Caymus, and pulled the 2012 Chappellet from the cellar to have a 6th wine.

Tapiz Alta Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Cabernet Sauvignon from Mendoza, Argentina

Priced around $20 a bottle.

I recommend this wine! Seriously give it a try!

Winemaker Notes

Intense red color. Aromas of fresh red and black fruits, with hints of eucalyptus. Its oak aging contributes notes of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. On the palate is persistent and balanced. Sweet tannins.

JS 96 James Suckling

A wine with lots of depth and fruit now with dark berry and dark chocolate character. Full body, velvety tannins and a long and flavorful finish. So much here. Give it four to five years bottle age. Great wine.

W&S 91 Wine & Spirits

Cabernet’s spice and mint notes mix here with deep cassis flavor. It’s tender, with enough depth for long-cooked meat and with tense acidity from its Andean origen in San Pablo, one of the highest areas planted to vines in Valle de Uco.

RP 90 The Wine Advocate

The 2014 Alta Collection Cabernet Sauvignon was very fresh and subtle, with perfectly integrated oak, I'd say a European profile gravitating towards elegance and finesse. Very good for what it is.

Sounds delicious! It is a big boy at 15.1%.

I really need to drink more US cab but sadly it is hard to get much quality stuff here at a decent price.

A Barossa Valley blend of 63% Cab Sav and 37% Shiraz.
A typical rich, assertive, full-bodied Aussie wine with lots of ripe plum but nicely balanced with chocolate and spice and never a 'blunt instrument'.
13.5% alcohol but I was getting the 'warmth' I often associate with slightly higher alcohol levels. Softened a little with a couple of hours exposure to the air. Lots of life in this vintage.
