Iconic - not flavour of the month...
The original poster asked about watches which were ICONS of Patek Philippe.
I view an icon as a design which has been loved for decades and represents a large part of the DNA of the brand. For Rolex this could be practically any watch as they only have three or four distinct models with all others being a variation of the case design. JLC has the reverso, Audemars Piguet has the Royal Oak and Patek has the..... Calatrava. The Nautilus has only very recently become popular, it has not been an icon of the brand over the last 30 years. The fancy minute repeaters and other exotic ephemera (which you possibly couldn't buy even if you had the money) do not qualify as again they are fairly recent developments in the conciousness of watch buyers. The Calatrava name has been diluted by Patek as it has been assigned to almost any simple 3 hand watch but the original is the reference 96. This has been in productiion in various forms constantly since the 1930's. First as the 96 then the 3796 and now it is seen in the 5196 and 5296. This is the watch that made Patek's reputation among watchmakers, before large advertising campaigns and the internet existed. The ref 96 had no display back and was a simple 3 hand movement in a small case. The design is a classic, even my father who cares nothing about watches saw the 96 and exclaimed, that is a beautiful, simple watch. So, the true icons that have stayed the test of time are the Calatrava line having been in demand since the 1930's. If you only buy one Patek make it a Calatrava as you can be fairly certain it will never go out of fashion. I like them - can you tell?
