Closest Patek to a Rolex
It seems to me that the Aquanaut 5167 1A is the closest Patek to a Rolex because:
*It has a 40mm case *It is water rated to 120 meters *It isn't a grand complication *It has a ss or tropic rubber strap option *It has a screw in locking crown *It has a 28,800 bph movement *It has crown guards; *It has an instant date change at midnight; *It has a centrally located auto winding rotor. So should one just consider it as a Rolex alternative to say a Submariner?

Stevo it cetainly makes a nice compliment to a Sub. I think like a Rolex Sub it is durable, simple and makes for a great sturdy daily watch. It would look especially nice in between a YG Sub with blue dial and a YG Daytona with black PN dial!

Steve-O if your considering an Aquanaut, it's worth looking at a Nautilus. But in the final analysis either would make a great choice.

I wouldn't consider the 5167 an alternative to the Sub, however, an addition are you tinkering with the idea of getting into the world of Patek Steve?

Oops, my apologies Mike! I'm getting rather confused with all those different references!

Steve,
I'm sure Puffy/Anders wants to chime in but he is on vacation, but I think it makes a nice compliment rather than a substitute. Even if the specs are pretty good on the Aquanaut, it is by no means a sturdy watch. The finish is certainly a stay way above a Sub, and it doesn't lend itself to any rougher treatment. Like an AP RO, it has a mix of hand polished and brushed surfaces that scratches most easily. The Cal 324 is beautiful to look at, even is quite talkative (you can hear/feel to rotor while the watch is on your wrist) which is charming, but it is certainly not a beater by any stretch of the imagination. My local PP AD advised me strongly against doing any type of sport with it, e.g. golf. Lastly, an Aquanaut cannot be serviced by anything than a PP specialist. It is not like a ETA or Rolex movement which lots of good watchmakers can tinker with rather easily. It is a great companion and very under-the-radar. And so comfortable on the wrist! Highly recommended! |
