Autmatatic Movements

I've owned a couple of self wind watches from a number of different brands such as Rolex,JLC, Panerai, IWC, and Brietling.

Granted some of these didn't have in house movements but they had solid ETA movements.

Regardless it appears that when I let my Nautilus and Royal Oak run down it really takes very little to get the watch running again. Basically picking it up and slight movement is all it takes and the watch will start running.

I generally do give them 40 winds if I'm going to wear them, I just thought it was pretty cool how it took very little before they would start running.

Maybe it has something to do with their low beat rate? Rolex and most ETA movements run at 28.800 bph, while most Patek and AP movements are 21.600 bph AFAIK. Or maybe the heavy solid gold rotor also has a role in that?

I was thinkinng it was possibly might be the rotor or maybe the fact that the movement was so finely finished and polished.

I'm not an expert but a more finished and polished movement would probably influence the accuracy more than the fact that it starts easier when you shake the watch. I would tend to agree more with the heavy rotor hypothesis, a 21kt gold rotor must be rather thick and heavy indeed.

Maybe your right Carl, I'm not sure though that's why T thought I would ask. By the way I'm not shaking the watch, just picking it up and moving it.

Perhaps my verb wasn't the good one but I had pretty much the same thing in mind.

...I tend to be rough with my watches!

No harm no foul Carl. I know some people that actually shake their watches to get them going, I'm not doing that. I just wanted to make sure I was being clear.

You were, my friend!

Besides, I do not shake my watch to start it either, I'd rather turn the crown, it's much more fun!
