McClaren put him in the bands for his looks and attitude, dressed up by Vivienne Westwood the band were created to be rebellious and anti establishment. Seems its still working. The fact that he could nor contribute musically had too much fame and money and was a drug addict was an almost inevitable by product for a sad individual. Sounds like he's still selling product which was the original idea.
