To each their own. In your shoes this makes sense. I have never found the appeal of ALS. Went to a boutique once and was super impressed with the folks there and setup. I handled about 4 watches and nothing did it for me.

I would argue in exchange for the killer movement one must accept an unbalanced dial side that was designed to provide balance to the datographs grand date.

With the L1 I agree the movement is nothing to jump for joy about but that dial is balanced in such a unique fashion with the golden ratio in mind. I just love that aspect.

I generally prefer chronographs but here I just can’t.

1. A WG Lange can replace many of the Rolex in your collection. And, a bit of your collection overlaps. Are there less worn ones you could offload?

Yep, there are a few I don't wear often to be honest. But some I can't move due to the attachment to special occasions etc.
Thankfully 38mm would be too big for my wife- a 36mm OP is a stretch for her. Which is good as I wouldn't want to share the ALS!

Definitely, I think the hobby has changed a lot over the years with the average public much more aware of wristwatches and their value. Even one of my friend's (who isn't at all into watches) 9 year old son asked me if my Explorer 1 was a Rolex. And when I said yes went 'woooooow'. Just goes to show that from a young age it's becoming more talked about.

RE: design process- It's based on the golden ratio isn't it? With the date window from the Opera house in Dresden? Would love for you to tell me more about it!

Been wearing Langes regularly, often daily, for over 20 years. Always with casual clothes (jeans etc.). Below was today (yesterday at this point), though leap year indicator isn't set properly (it's 1 year too far). They're well built and nobody comments on them (Lange 1, 1815, etc.) except for the Zeitwerk.

I'd suggest you look at preowned Langes if you want to save some money. For standard-production models, I always suggest buying a preowned one for a fair price from a reputable seller (unless you want to establish a relationship with a boutique to get more limited pieces later).

Yep I think I’ll go the pre-owned route. The price difference is just too high- and I don’t think I’ll be in the position to be able to have multiple hard to get ones from boutique. However, the boutique experience when I was there was amazing.

That being said, I picked up my first Lange just a few days ago which I chased for some time and it is gorgeous. Whenever I look at the watch I literally forget to read time.

I had worn my Sax-o-Mat, as a daily for over thirty three years. Love it, great watch. In all that time only two people ever noticed what it was and commented on it.

I didn't have to sell any of my Rolex to buy one, I just gifted myself this Lange Up/Down for my 50th birthday. I've had it for over two years and it still amazes me. Completely different level of finish/workmanship from the Rolex, but I have given it a different purpose in my collection - it represents me on the occasion of the most important meetings and family events.

Next time you send that watch to Lange for servicing, you might consider having Lange swap your crystals (or at least the front crystal) for one with antireflective coating. Lange typically didn't use AR-coated crystals on their MOP (and other guilloche) dials, which is a real shame. Bad decision, in my opinion. Those MOP guilloche dials look far better through AR-coated crystals, with very little glare.

Here are some relevant pics. Bottom pic shows gold guilloche dials, not MOP, but you can see how the reflection of a compact fluorescent bulb looks in an AR vs. non-AR Lange crystal.

Very interesting. I have the saxonia copper blue and the crystal always has smudges which I’ve never experienced with my other watches. Is this due to no AR?
