Official 5990 Appreciation Thread <<<<<<<<

Well, it's time. Lots of incomings lately and a few more on the horizon awaiting delivery. This watch needs its own dedicated thread. A few of my favorites....

Very nice photos. I should be getting my 5990 in about 6 months or so.

i know it is an appreciation thread but nevertheless here is what i do not like with the 5990:
1) i dislike date wheels, same on my 5524. no, in all fairness, the date wheel on the 5990 is better than on the 5524, but still...dislike.
2)no hour counter for the chrono function.....strong dislike.
3)the watch is too thick, looks overblown in girth, somewhat a fat boy:::))).
4)the grey dial looks a bit lifeless, or understated depending on whether your glass is half empty or half full.
disclaimer: i got very close to being offered one and surely would have accepted. now i have the 5980AR on order (summer incoming) and surely would not go back to the 5990.

Regarding the lack of hour counter, I see it as a bit of a compromise - you lose some functionality, but legibility is vastly improved. I could never read the chrono on my 5980.

Oh, and if you think the 5990 is too thick then you’re going to have the same issue with your 5980, except the 5980 does not sit as well on the wrist.

i double-checked and you are right, the 5990 and 5980 are both around 12.5 mm thick:::((((( strange though because the 5990 looked so weird in the side profil when i tried it.

i agree with this. I like both a lot but the 5990 wears better. I think the caseback is different as it does sit differently. Basically the same thickness though.

I dislike cluttered subdials so 60 minutes is fine for me as i dont really time anything longer than that anyway. Multiple subdial chronographs are better suited for hours and minutes, its too much for one subdial IMO. Plus 60 minutes is twice as long as the 5170

I have to say the 5990 is a piece that has really grown on me over the years. I love how they brought two very practical complications together and made it easy to use, while keeping the dial clean and relatively uncluttered. The 5980 reminded me of a roulette wheel... never really warmed up to it.

Keep the pictures coming!

Big fan over here.
It’s prime for Patek to drop a 5990 1R.
