5650G Advanced Research - who else regrets not ordering one
I had the opportunity to order the 5650G when it was first released but was put off by the number made (500 versus 300 for the 5550P) and the price differential between this and the 5164 (c90%). I also found the open face a bit gimmicky.
Fast forward 15 months and upon reflection the production number doesn’t seem to be too great if you assume tbe general increase in the number of watch collectors (growth of the middle class in EM countries, increased disposal income in the west and economic recovery in Japan etc). The price differential also seems to be fair given that it is in precious metal and has the AR movement. For example the 5168G is c110% more expensive than the 5167. More importantly I now love the dial layout and size, the open work, the colour basically everything about it. Anyone else in the same boat? May have to settle for the 5168G - this is supposed to be a limited edition (not limited production model) does anyone have any thoughts on how long this will be in production for? |

I do want it a lot... but as I know 500 pieces are not sold out yet. Of course they say so but if you are a good customer and if you order a 500k++ piece you still have the chance...

i like the AR a lot.
However at this point if i was thinking alternative it would not be the 5168G it would be the 5968A. I would rather have that way way more than a 5168.

for some reason the 5968A is not doing it for me at the moment and I have the same movement in my 5980.
Saying that - in a few weeks I'm sure I will be lusting after it with the same delayed response as I had with the 5650G |

Yes and i otfered the 5320 and 5650G at Baselworld. When the time came i had to say no the watch as they dangled another grail before me and i couldnt have both. I also wasnt sure i would wear it being a G...i dont have any regrets. Knowing its worth $150k i would have worn it less

I was offered it from Basel by my AD and had to make a quick decision and passed. I didn't spend much time looking at the piece until afterwards as was caught off guard and a bit busy at the time of call. Oh well live and learn and certainly wasn't my first regret over a watch and won't be my last! At least I have the 5168G coming this year and do look forward to that one.

If I was looking at this I would now be glad I passed with lasers focussed on the 5740.

I am happy I asked my AD for the 5650 when announced. When they got back from Basel they told me they were not getting one. I was fortunate to get one when released. It is nerve wracking to wear now knowing what they go for on the open market.

I regret not ordering the 5650G and initially I was put off by the numbers made as well. I have handled the 5168G a few times and it is a very beautiful watch. I have seen grey dealers advertising it with saying it was a "limited edition" or "20th anniversary aquanaut" and I always thought they were saying it to justify the £10K premium and none of the ADs had told me this was a limited edition model.

Not suggesting for a second you would have flipped it, as I don’t believe you would, but it’s always nice to know your watch isn’t depreciating. |

I have bought several Patek watches from them so I just strongly urged them to get me one every time I was there and yes, love the 5164 so a no brained for me. Quote:
Thanks Neil. It is a tough watch to photo. The blue needs lots of light but then the open works has a lot of glare. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have been collecting Patek for many years and whilst the appreciation is nice it isn’t the key driver for me. I do have a 5168G on order (would have liked to have both) and ordered this before realising that it was selling for a premium in the secondary market. Truth be told - it was actually seeing a picture of Kevin Hart wearing on (see celebwatchspotter on instagram https://instagram.com/p/Bi9IEPCBz06/ ) that reminded me about the mistake I had made. |

Are these actually trading for $150k now? That makes the 5711 markup look like chump change.

It is estimated that Patek produces 1000+ 5711/1A's annually and they have been produced for 10+ years. If you do the math, there are at least 10,000 5711/1A's out there. It's still not a huge number compared to the number of SS Subs or SS GMTs produced, but still not a small number by any means. |

My AD got two but there was no way one was going to a small player like me, both went to whales, looks amazing in real, way cooler than a 5168, had both side by side not long ago, and it is a stunner, quite disgusted when I see so many at greys selling for 2,5-3 times retail, if I had more money I would get one even with the premium, don’t think there will ever be again a LE Aquanaut and it is ultra cool

I kind of wanted this one but having already bought 3 that year I abstained. Definitely a cool piece though.
