Advice on 5980 Black or Blue Dial
Hello Folks,
Originally I was planning to buy a used 5712 steel bracelet but I changed my mind. I am set on buying a 5980 steel bracelet. I have two offers from a reliable re-seller for which I am undecided: 1. 2014 5980/1A-014 (Black dial). This dial is supposed to be rarer than the Blue Dial and supposed to be a "hard to find model". Just serviced last month. 2. 2012 5980/1A-001 (Blue Dial). Serviced 8 months ago. Need your advice to make a decision. Both were polished for the first time and both certain parts replaced like the crystal and pushers. Same price. Thank you in advance. |

Although I really love blue dials a SS 5980 must have the black dial for me.
Easy decision IMO, as the -014 is younger and has a brand new service for exactly the same price. |

I would go with option 1.
Edit just read both polished so like Russ I wouldn't touch either.

To be honest I wouldn’t touch either if they’ve been polished.

Were they serviced by Patek? If so I wouldn’t worry about the polish personally.
Between the two I like the black, the matching background on the date is the determining factor for me, which I think centers the focus on the “bullseye,” best of luck as you decide. |

Thank you for your replies. I really appreciate your comments.
Yes both watches were serviced by Patek. The black dial had wordings "Partial Job- Polishing" on its invoice and the blue had "Case and bracelet polishing for Nautilus" on its invoice. |

Who did the service/ polish? If it was not done by Patek then I would pass on both. I favor the blue 5980.

Both watches were done by Patek Authorized service centers. So both watches are technically in excellent condition.

Sharp looking black dial. Look really good on you. Mine say hi. To OP, I’d suggest the black dial too as it is rarer and produce,in lower number. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I personally prefer the blue for the looks and suggest you go for what appeals to you. Understanding the black dial was produced in smaller volume will they be valued more than the blue dials in the future?

Blue and wouldn't worry about the polish if done by PP.

I think if you have other nautilus for example 5711 or 5712 in blue dial, I would definitely recommend the black grey dial for 5980. And it is possible that black dial can become more valuable in future due to its lower production number. For me I like the black dial because the dark date wheel which match the dial nicely. :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Never buy a watch that features sharp angles (nautilus, Royal Oak, etc) that has been polished. Even the manufacturer can’t get it like new and those stunning edges end up softened and ruin the look of the watch. The only way to do it is to buy new or get one with a new bezel.
As for colour I would take blue, but just whatever you prefer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Has to be the blue dial but as already stated avoid any that has been polished and has lost its defined angles

Unless it's 50-50 on your choice of dials, only buy your favorite and not necessarily the rarer. With that being said, blue is my choice! There is nothing wrong with adding both!

Black grey would be my choice! Get the blue only for the iconic 5711.
I would wait for an unpolished version. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
