Secondhand and Damaged - Submariner 14060m
Guys,
Your advice please, I was checking out secondhand watches and found a nice non date sub 2008. I say nice, but in fact it is damaged, I am just wondering if I could strike a deal that would make this worth buying. The asking price is £2350, against an mrrp of £3380, although these can be purchased grey easily for £2750. The problem is that it has a large scratch on the crystal, and the crystal has somehow been rotated so the LEC is now at 630. I am amazed that someone has damaged it in this way, it makes me wonder if the bezel is also non original as i would have thought that this would also have been damaged?? If I bought this it would be sent straight to RSC for a new crystal and service, the question is how much would this cost? I am thinking if I could get the wach for <£2k this could turn out to be a good deal? Any coments? I am thinking the risk may to too high? Also if I were to sell on, would the maintenance history effect its value? Thanks, Chris |

Hi,
The asking price is a "normal" price for a 14060 which is in good shape. Considering the dial and crystal are damaged you need to add maybe another GBP 500 to get if fixed. As speedy said pass on that and look for one in good shape with box and papers which you would get around GBP 2,500. Happy Easter Axel |

I second the advice from Speedy and Axel. Why take the chance with a watch that has clearly not been taken care of. You should be able to find a non-COSC 14060 in better condition for less money, I for one prefer a Sub ND to have less dial writing.
Good luck in your search.

I can't be 100% sure, but I think the non date sapphire is around £80 including VAT.
I think you would probably get away with around that as a cost as if the watch does not require a service due to it age. Ring Bexley on Tuesday and ask I'm sure they could tell you approx cost over the phone if you tell them you have a 2008 Sub 14060 that you've damaged the crystal on Is that the little pawn type shop tucked away just off the main road??? I'm sure they must have room for a deal, but unless you can get it for £2000 or less and you can get away with as little as £80 I'd give it a miss personally. |

Give it a miss. Two weeks ago I purchased a BNIB V series 14060M for GBP 2320. Yes that is correct.
Non AD but very reputed with a huge selection of top quality watches. I buy from them quite regular. Got the whole works with it too. |

If you can't afford a 'healthy' one, I wouldn't waste my money on a sick one.

Guys,
Thanks, for the input, I fully agree that the risk is too high on this one. I might have a chat with the guys in the shop just out of interest though. [QUOTE=Spark;1104669] Is that the little pawn type shop tucked away just off the main road??? Yes I think we are talking about the same place, just by the pannier market? Regards, Chris |

I'm gong to disagree with everybody..
If the watch is truly a 2008, then it doesn't need a service yet... The insides are probably just fine.. As for the crystal scratch, it could have been anything.....even something as stupid as a "friend" showing how he can scratch the impervious Sapphire, or mis-adventure in the workshop....... I can't count the number of crystals I've scratched or broken.. If it can be had at a decent price, a 100 dollar crystal can be put on at most AD's who have a watchmaker on staff.. In the US, I might look around to see if there is a better bargain, but I understand that in the UK a good SS Sub is hard to come by. .............

Tools, thanks, a different take indeed. I will have a chat with the shop and see what deals may be available.
With regards the apparrent rotation of the crystal (with LEC now at 630), is that some thing that is common? I find it hard to believe how that has occurred... unless someone has already dismantled to try and fix the scratch?! Chris |

On the non date crystals, the crown should be at 6 o'clock... but I have seen them at any number of other locations........the watch doesn't really care where it's at.
I don't see any reason why anybody would take the crystal off and not replace it after that much work............ It is a curious situation, but not one to be alarmed about...... make sure the bezel rotates freely and the tube "O" ring is in the proper location... ensure that when you set the time a clockwise rotation of the crown results in a clockwise movement of the hands..

Before I realized you were talking about pounds sterling, I thought 2350 was an awesome deal. As it lies, though, I'd pass.

As the crystal has no "locator" but seats with its seal on the case, a severe knock, that caused the scratch, may have caused also the slight rotation. Such a knock, might have affected also the movement. Unless permitted to open and check, or even simply check on a special tool the angle of the rotation and friction, walk away !
