Smooth stainless steel bezel

How easy is it for the bezel to scratch or show signs of wear? I had an AD tell me the other day it sometimes scratches easy if you wear it a lot. Just wanted everyone’s thoughts or personal accounts of their smooth bezels...

Thanks

You can see it easier, therefore it feels as if it scratches easier.

I think it gives a watch character...

It has not been an issue for me on my watches, after years of wear.

No issues with my 36mm DJ I purchased in 1998. Just take care of it, like anything else.

I got mine in July 2010... Wore it as a daily for almost 7 years. So I guess it also depends if you wear it only as a dress watch or as a daily.

I have no problem with it. The watches are fed more slim than the big bezel watches so I barely even catch or notice it on my sub has hit many door frames over the yrs

Any watch with a smooth polished bezel will show wear faster. They're scratch magnets !

I don't think so. I believe if you're hard on your watch it's going to get dinged and scratched. If your not then it's less likely. Hasn't been a problem with my OP39 or any of the other watches I have.

Cheers. To me, I paid enough money for it to not have to be careful with it.

Rolex watches can take some knocks and still work well and look awesome.

You’ll get a variety of responses, but my personal experience has been that they scratch quite easily, and I’m fairly careful with my watches.

It will depend very much on your discipline and habits. If I am sure that its likely that I will be partaking in an activity that “could” damage my Luxury watch, I have several beaters I wear from Casio/Seiko for that. Once you get into the routine of “watch for occasions” its pretty easy.

The second school of thought is what I myself practiced for over 15 years. This included wearing one watch 24/7 no matter what the occasion. In my case it was a Daytona zenith. If you prefer that route, then its pretty easy to figure out how it works (at least for me). It entails a service every 5 or so years. During the service expect to replace lower bracelet links if badly scratched, bezel, pushers (if a chrono), crown and stem. At around the decade mark I also replaced the whole bracelet at the 12 o’clock side since thats the side that wears on tables, desks, etc. Thankfully I hadn’t damaged the case nor the lugs, so the watch was always returned like new.

Here it is in all it’s glory today, rarely worn now but, my only watch at one point. In approx 25 years, It’s had two oem bezels, one side of bracelet, 3 services, 2 sets of pushers/crowns and one rotating winder (bearings failed). Rolex don’t tell you what they replace in the movement so I have no idea if parts were replaced during service but I’m assuming so. The watch never actually stopped over the years but, around every 5 year mark it just looked pretty shabby.

Yes it does so easier, the bezel on the DJ41, Milgauss and Airking are basically mirrors.

I prefer the smooth bezel look though..

The OP's rounded bezel wears a whole lot better (and smaller) than the flat ones.

Yes, but some people do not like the way that polishing changes the appearance of the watch (for example, during polishing metal material is removed, edges are softened etc...)

Smooth bezels show wear just as any other polished surface of a Rolex does. They might be more prone to scratches based on their location. I have an Explorer II which has a brushed steel bezel and it has scratches. I think a better statement here is that fluted bezels just hide scratches really well because of the faceted surface.

It’s worse to get a meaty scratch on a clean watch

I prefer it when they are worn in.

Agreed, they just look a bit better with some swirls and scratches IMO.

Yes, but I have found RSC does excellent work. I have seen examples of overpolishing that have some people avoid it all together. I have had my 5 digit Exp II serviced twice by RSC since purchasing new in 2003. After both services it was returned looking and feeling like new. Oyster bracelet and clasp were adjusted/serviced. It was top notch as you would expect from Rolex.

I think as long as your watch just has micro-scratches with no deep dings or scratches, a light polish is a good thing. Attempting to remove the deeper scratches is where the overpolished appearance can come into play.
