IF one were to go 16610 Box + Papers versus 1966 7928
I recently acquired the 7928 and now find myself wondering...should I keep it, keep the 16610, keep both, or sell one of the two?
There is no real need or time frame to sell, just dealing with justification issues about having two 'subs' although they are night and day within the world of 'subs'. I am a bit divided because I feel the 7928 wins in the charm factor, but my dial is average and insert is later 70's (a proper long 5 bezel has just gotten too expensive to add to this one considering the dial). The 16610 is a classic in better condition with box and papers, but it's just not doing it for me the way it used to. Any input is appreciated. I do consider value in my buys, and while I lack a crystal ball, I do keep it in mind when trying to hypothesize on (possible) appreciation in regards to which reference to keep or part with, that is less of a concern with these two, but I would not be forthcoming if I pretended value did not matter at all. |

Keep the 7928, if the 16610 not doing it for you sell it

Two Subs seems like a bare minimum to me. One vintage, one modern for rainy days. ;-)

Sounds to me as though you might be best served by letting them both go. You could then put the money into a watch for which you will not have to make any excuses (although personally I think the two watches you have are very nice). Good luck with your decision.

The discoloration on the bottom half of the dial will really impact the collectability of the 7928. Is that mold? If you had to let one go I'd say the 7928. Honestly why not let both go and get a nice clean example of a 7928 or a 5513?

I do like 4 digit over 5!
Not sure what bottom discoloration is on the 3-7 lume plots but it luckily does not affect the other plots, they actually have a small amount of luminescence in a very dark room. Doubt it’s mold, I’ve seen this discoloration on lumes from many brands from this late 60’s epoch. It’s always a bummer but not a “deal killer” depending on the deal. I laugh, because years ago when I first started collecting when the prices were cheap to sane, it would just be “some shit on the dial” and be cheaper than the better examples. I oddly don’t love 5513’s...now a red sub on the other hand, but those are so messed with over time they are now their own mine field. I always appreciate the insights gentlemen! I think you should keep the 16610 (it's a classic Sub all the time), and let the 7928 go. Buy a 1675 GMT instead.

If one had to go it would be the Submariner but I would keep both.

You’re not crazy about either. And with good reason. The Tudor has its problems (that mold would drive me crazy, and I’d always be looking out for a correct insert). And the 16610 you’re bored with (I would be, too).
So, why WOULDN'T you sell both and buy one watch you love wholly. It’s a great feeling, man! |

Kingface, I think you hit the nail on the head. The 16610 is boring me and I never wear it anymore.
The rest of my collection is more 60's and 70's so the Tudor, if it was right, would probably be a keeper as I love the gloss dial and gilt track, but the insert, while somewhat charming is wrong and that bugs me and the dial doesn't bug me too bad, but it's more average than I prefer in my collection. I am not in the mood to start the whole sales process with either (unless a 'new to me' great watch presents itself in which case they are gone pecans) but just not in love with either. |

I would keep both, If you regret selling the 16610 and decide to get another you will end up spending more to replace it

Thrasher, you are right on 16610's! They just keep going up. May just put the 16610 in the box on ice and forget about it versus selling it*.

2 subs is not necessarily too many (have 6 and get joy from each one) IMHO, but it sounds like those two may not be the right ones.
I'd shed both and, assuming you want to maintain a similar cost basis, get a red 1680, 5513 (although sounds like you don't love those), a better condition 7928 or a tudor snowflake. Another option would be to trade your 16610 for a SD4K to mix it up a bit. Unless either watch has sentimental value, I don't think you'll regret swapping out your existing sub for a another sub (but may regret switching out to a significantly different model or brand). |
