Hey thanks. I quite like this reference. Not sure it will be easily available.

Is the lume stronger? How does it wear compared to the 15400? Smaller. Larger or the same?

Great side by side review!

Would like to see both side by side in real life but everything I’m seeing in pics makes me glad I have the 15400 silver dial.

Make me appreciate more on my 15300 39mm. I agree that the 39mm is still perfect

Agreed. I think the longer batons on the 15400 look better, on the 15500 there seems to be a bit too much empty dial space (particularly don't like the removal of the "Automatic" text at the bottom). Also while I agree that the height of the 15400 is a bit too short (see proportions, golden rule of), imo a full mm height increase would have been preferable, but this is a nitpick as it's not all that noticeable. Still, it looks nice and should do well.

Nice write up. Curious to see the new model in person.

Well good on you for taking a bold stance lol basically calling the new 15500 trash.

“all we can say is that the Royal Oak ref. 15400 is much superior despite the use of calibre 3120 and a watch that will be dearly missed from AP’s lineup. In reality the 15400 is by far a much better looking Royal Oak when compared to the new 15500. ”

Nice write up altho it doesn't support your conclusion which is far too partisan. I'd say it is a close call and the fact that the thickness change is negligible makes this even more so.

Nice article as always, and enjoyed reading about your take on the 15500.

Just wanted to comment on one sentence you wrote: "At first glance, one would think that this is a quartz Royal Oak as the word ‘Automatic’ was removed, making this Royal Oak reference, the first self-winding Royal Oak since 1972 to not bear the ‘Automatic’ designation on its dial.".

Assuming you mean full-dial models, then I think what you wrote is true of the date-only references. However AP have also not displayed the word "Automatic" on various other self-winding ROs (with full-dials) over the years, starting from 2005 and possibly further back.

I like more 15400 with longer markers but it is matter of personal preference... but the step dial really cheapen the whole look...

Much prefer the 15400, no text on the bottom half of the dial and shorter markers were a mistake.

Having owned a 15300, 15400 and 15202 I still think the 39mm proportions were better, but the 15400 is an amazing reference for people with larger wrists.

Thanks for the review Hal. Well done. Its refreshing to read an actual critical review in a watch blog, when nowadays most of the mainstream ones are avoiding doing so and their reviews sound like advertisement for the brands.

Well it was already that way for the 15400 and I would assume the boutique would say that even if it wasn’t to try and hype the watch.

Apparently all 15400 orders have been transferred automatically to the 15500. Given 2-3 years is the quote for the 15400 no surprise that the queue is now out of the door. I think that the 15500 is going to be very hard to get for some time, at least in part fuelled by the fact that 5711 Nautilus has become a virtual watch that I don't actually think exists any more and everyone seems to want a Gerald Genta design in their collection!

FD.

yes I was glad I was able to preorder from the boutique on the first day, the next day they informed my friend who is interested too that all the orders have been sold out for the year.

Wears exactly the same and the lume is as weak as all AP lume.

Dial seems incomplete because of the shorter batons and missing 'automatic'.

Yes, I was referring to date models.
