Which Sub you prefer? 16610 LN vs 116610LN

I have the surprise opportunity to buy a new 116610 from my AD but I would need to trade in my older model (2010). I can’t justify having both. Thoughts on which you like better & why. I’ve read about the changes/ improvements. My wrist is on the smaller scale at 6.75 so I’m thinking the older version could be more suitable design wise...

They both have their charm, no doubt. The 6 digit references are just so much better crafted IMO. The heft, the bracelets, the case, movement, glidelock. For me, they win. For the record, I've had both.

I have the 16610 and it's perfect with my 6.75" wrist, the 116610 was just a little too boxy but i do love the Glidelock clasp.

In my humble opinion. The 6 digit version wins. The Glidelock clasp is an engineering marvel. With a small wrist, it is more balance. My wife, she is wearing my 116610LN now. The watch is sized to the minimum. Not including the SEL, she wears 4-link & 3-link on the 12 & 6 o’clock sides respectively.

That’s why I have 3. Gotta love the Glidelock.

I have a 16570 EXPII Polar. She liked it but for her small wrist, even when you minimize the bracelet, it does not fit her. Ironically, the new 116610 fits perfectly for those with small wrist. For her to wear the 5-digit, we have to break one permanent link or wear it on a RubberB rubber strap.

The above is just me. If you fell sentimental about your 16610LN, you should keep it. Rolex are made to last a lifetime.

Sounds like the AD knows what they're doing, and you're somewhat unconvinced by the improvements you've read about.

So when you mention “improvement” in my eyes there’s only one truly objective improvement, of course I’m speaking of the bracelet. If you prefer the old tin can that’s cool, but I think you’re nuts haha.

That said, I much prefer the 116610, not just because of the bracelet, but the maxi dial, bigger crown, ceramic bezel and I give a slight edge to the bigger case and thicker lugs. The older case shape is truly charming, but overall I just like the 6 digit. But again, aside from the bracelet, it’s all a matter of preference.

I love all the upgrades aside the bigger lugs and chunky crown guards. However, you do get used to it and this goes unnoticed after a while. I think the two can co-exist together if you can have both..

The bracelet on the 6 digit is a vast improvement over the tuna can bracelet and the lumen is also an improvement, but the style and symmetry of the 5 digit is still more appealing to me. I sold off my 1116613LB, 116610LV, and my 116610LN as grey market prices have become insane. Doubt if I will ever sell my 5 digit watches

You will regret letting go of that 5-digit. I sincerely suggest you add the modern Sub instead to enjoy its improvements. Trust us.

5 digit is preferable to me. I don't like the square look of the 6.

Movement is the same cal 3135 that was introduced in 1988 yes perhaps the clasp could be a improvement and even some of those have failed. The case is the same except for slight lug changes which some like but many hate. But better crafted well that's down to personal opinions .

I had a 16610 and now a 116610LN, no comparision. The 116610 wins. Bracelet, maxi dial, cerachrom, a little bit more bigger, better endlinks, better clasp, blue chromalight is nicer, and glidelock is a must. Both are great but for me modern Rolex are better

It's the 11 all the way for me. But I'm not you. It's what you like that matters.

Back in the days that now seem like an imagined alternative reality, I walked into my AD and tried on the 16610LV. I was disappointed by the lack of heft, the tinny, semi hollow bracelet and the awful fold out diving extension. But it looked so god. Still does. This was not enough for me. The 116610LV has addressed all this and more. It's a perfect mix of style, size precision solidity and weight for me.

Which is fine for me. But I'm not you.

116610 by a hair. Ceramic bezel and glidelock really are nice features. I’m not crazy about the fatter lugs but I also think people go a little overboard on it. They are both phenomenal watches.

I prefer the new with these two. The ideal Rolex is the 16610LV with a black insert. Since it is easy to switch out that would be my choice but we all know the craziness with LV so for me it's the 116610LN. After spending so much time with maxi dials I can't stand the skinny hands and little markers.
Honestly you can't go wrong with any Submariner. Win win either way.

The wider lugs are for me the only downside of 6 digit against the 5. If you want narrower lugs and glide lock find yourself an SD4k

You have one of the last 16610 examples produced. To me, the mid- to late-00’s represent the best Rolex era....the pinnacle of the classic Rolex line I grew up admiring. I was just looking at my brother in law’s 16610 at brunch this morning, and thinking what a fantastic reference that is.....one of the all-time classics in all of watchmaking. I would not let it go.

I like them both models and I don't feel so strongly about one of over the other. Most of the differences are up to the individual to decide which they prefer, but there are three ways the new model is definitely "better" to me:

1. Bezel Action- Say what you want about the next 2 items on my list, but no one can deny that the smooth clicks of the new model is better than the old one.

2. Clasp- easy customization is better, but I don't really like how bulky it is.

3. Weight- this one is more subjective, but I much prefer the heft of the new one.
