Is my brand new Rolex DJ ruined?

Hi Guys

In a bit of a panic here, I wore my new YG/SS watch into the hot tub and it’s turned the YG into a copper-ish colour.

Is this ruined or can it be polished back to normal?

If not, where do I go from here? Will Rolex cover it in the guarantee?

In fact I’m up at 4am as I’m not able to sleep thinking I’ve put 10k down the drain.

Give it a good cleaning. Remember it is waterproof and a bit of detergent and water won't hurt it.

makes no sense. maybe try having it cleaned? maybe the chlorine affected the tint of the gold but i would think you can have it cleaned and it should come off. i just dont get it. plenty of people wear their Rolex's in the pool with no issue. Maybe this was over chlorinated? i would think a very light polish or cleaning will do the trick, otherwise definitely take it to Rolex and i have a feeling they will fix it up for you.

It’s not the greatest picture but you can see the difference in colour, it’s meant to be (as you all probably know the same colour gold as the hands) it’s now a lot more red.

Yikes!! Its really reddish orange. I wonder what type of chemicals might have been in that hot tub. Fingers crossed for you!

To add... it’s not like I was in there a long time - it was around 30 minutes before I actually noticed the colour change - at first I thought (I must be drunk) but obviously not.

That is peculiar. I had my two tone YG/SS DJ41 in hot tubs recently without issue.

The chlorine in the water reacted with the metals mixed in with the gold.
Gold used in jewelry is an alloy with other metals added to make it harder.

A polish should get the tarnish off.
Take it a good jeweler or RSC.

Oh wow.... I've heard of this happening to old rose gold models in chlorinated pools but ever since Rolex termed the word Everose, this was supposed to be corrected... What's interesting is you have a YG, which I've never heard of this happening to..

I would take it back to the AD first before you do anything else. While I agree it should be fixed with a polish to remove the tarnish caused by the chlorine, they may provide a better option. Besides, polishing a jubilee bracelet and all the individual gold links...yikes!

I had a similar problem on my TT oyster bracelet but it was more a oxidation rather than a hot tub issue.
I used a Cape cod polishing cloth and gently rub on the affected gold portion. It managed to restore “rose” gold to yellow gold.

18 karat gold is around 10% copper. If copper is oxidized by chlorine to copper (II) chloride anhydrous, the result is a brown color...which, when combined with yellow gold, would probably look red-ish.

If something like this really is what happened, I hope at the very least it shuts up the snide nitwits who mock anyone for asking whether it's safe to perform a given activity while wearing an expensive watch.

Hot tub may well have had bromine, rather than chlorine, as its chemical cleaning base.

If the levels were too high, then that could well be the cause.

........ just think how many TT Subs see swimming pools with chlorine.

This is not right. Gold is used because its non reactive ie it doesn't tarnish. Your watch might be fake.
