Great article. And to the OP I’m sorry this happened to you. I would be losing my s***. I was just on vacation with my full YG sub. I’ve never heard of this happening before to a Rolex but I dont think I’ll be taking mine swimming anymore , even tho that make me a little sad now Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Is my brand new Rolex DJ ruined?
Just a Google question/response:
Before going into a hot tub or swimming pool. Chlorine can damage and discolor metals (like gold and platinum) and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones. |

Rounding off is inevitable, but as long as the bezel is spinning and you don't overdo it, the edges will only be a little bit softer than an untouched bezel. |

Wow lots of comments here since I last checked. I’m no chemist, but I think anyone with basic chemistry knowledge would agree that metals plus chemicals plus heat can promote some funny reactions. From a statistics perspective though, how many TT or all gold rolexes over the past 50 years have there been that went into a hot tub or pool and came out looking completely fine? Probably well over 99%. All that to say that while the chemistry could in theory cause the reaction shown by the OP, depending on the metal and chemical specifics, statistics says it should not happen in most circumstances. Therefore, either the conditions of the hot tub were WAY off from normal (as in Pool Shock, which you might also suspect to cause skin and eye irritation), or the composition of the Rolex metal is different from usual. I think the latter is unlikely. So for me, yes it’s still safe to take a gold Rolex into a pool or hot tub. This occurrence is likely an anomaly in one way or the other, but will be good to see what the RSC says.

You’re correct. I really enjoy this forum but some posts can be very misleading. |

Congrats on the new pieces. Long thread so not sure if you mentioned where they original pieces was acquired but I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be a replica. 18k can really hold up well to very corrosive environments including high concentrations of hydrochloric acid. Keep us posted.

The reason the watch in question is looked at with speculation is that with all the amount of Rolex watches on this forum and the length this forum has been running, we haven’t seen any that I am aware of turn it’s hue this severe. We have seen enough bogus watches come through that have tarnished in a similar way as the OP’s.
Factor in how many of us WIS have decades of Rolex ownership and forum experience, you must question such a rare occurrence. We have seen countless torture test on Rolex watches from forum members. Watch accidents all over the globe from being bathed in gasoline to frozen in blocks of ice without damage. |

congrats OP on ur new his/hers acquisition but i am gonna bring up this point again.. in the pics u posted of the before-hot-tub and what appears to be at an AD (post #171), the bracelet already shows reddish hue and doesnt even match its own bezel. (see pic below. because i dont think lotta people clicked on ur link) Especially compared to the DJ champagne dial next to it (the one with tag)... was this a BRAND NEW watch u purchased from the AD ? i am just curious.
