No worries mate.

In regards to pricing I was playing on the Rolex website and looked at all gold ladies Datejust price was 45k Canadian. This works out to about 31k USd. If it were me, I would much prefer to get the watch brand new with factory warranty and lose the day complication. This would serve two purposes.

1) you get Rolex warranty and a brand new watch

2) helps you build some further buying history with your AD on a hard to move watch. This may play in your favour in the future if you’re looking for a hotter item for yourself.

Either way you go, congrats in advance. I am sure you mom will be stoked to get a watch from you.

A 118388 us selling for around $35k
And i really don’t see the difference.
I think a $25k-26k would be a fair price.

If you can swing

$28,000 on a gift for mom go for it. Before you do I would make sure it is something she would really appreciate, especially when a simple DateJust may suffice. The diamonds may not appeal to her. I'm not saying they won't but it is something to consider before putting down $28,000.

Not to mention mentioning those deviants in the same sentence with the OP's mother is bad form.

You have bezel and diamond lugs. 28 is not a rip off but try for closer to 25k

Bezel sold seperate is 5 k used so compare to others
Lugs another 5k extra used usually.
+ it’s a rarer model.

Are you 100% certain those are factory diamond settings??? You mentioned that there's no papers and IMO the settings for those diamonds look too "sloppy" to reflect the quality work that Rolex usually does. I would have very, very serious doubts about that being a factory bezel.

It is in fact a factory piece as the reference number on the watch indicates 18388

Then it’s possible that the bezel has been swapped out. Those settings just don’t look right. They look amateur-ish compared to the work Rolex usually does.

I actually own another 18388 models but it was purchased a while ago and the dial is different so I cannot base the price off of that.
And I also have a 116244 (I’m a sucker for factory bling) and I noticed a difference in the bezel sitting.
The newer 6 digit seem to hav 2 prongs holding each diamond in the bezel which makes it look nicer in my opinion while the older 5 digit models have 3 prongs holding the diamond from each side.
Pic included for viewers pleasure
Btw that’s a factory myriad ruby dial.

This is my reaction. Rare hard to find model. Diamond lugs are neat.

The condition of having a hideous diamond encrusted bezel that makes it look like a piece of costume jewellery but they want almost thirty grand for it?

It may be exact perfect factory condition but would be a hard pass for me too

Fashion and taste aside, I don't know what the fair price is for something like this because I'm totally not in the market for it. And I agree 'getting what mother really wants' is more important than 'how much did it cost me to get her what she wants'

But I know if I was spending that sort of price range for a gift for mom, I would take her to an AD and tell her to spec whatever she wanted and have the full AD luxury watch buying treatment while getting a perfect condition piece with warranty.

To save x% or whatever by getting one without history and some links missing, is hard to guess whether with hindsight that will seem 'fair'. No doubt you could buy smarter and save y% instead - which would be a better outcome; or you could pay more for a new one with the recipient knowing it was a brand new watch with nice attention from the authorised dealer, that had definitely not been previously owned by some trophy wife who died in it.

All IMHO, YMMV etc

A stunning present for your Mum, and as you say it is EXACTLY what she wants.
The combination of dial and bling is beautiful. (and I say this being a bloke who likes s/s sports LOL)
So as wearable jewellery that is useful too (tells the shiny time! :)
Judging by the others you show pictured, you have some of the best experience of these watches - only you can decide (if timeline is pressing too!)

Would you pay $28k ?

My mom would say she wanted a Merc Station Wagon with all leather interior and all the amenities, but if I went out and bought it for her, she would scorn me for spending that type of money on a car.

A well thought gift from a child is worth 10x it’s cost. Get her what you think would suit her and give her the reasoning behind it. It may be that one, but whatever it is, do it because you feel it. She’ll be over the moon for it.

gotta love TRF where someone asks about the price of something they know their mom wants and everyone comes in telling them to get her something else instead ... lol. if you don't like diamonds you don't have to voice your opinion here, its not for you

to the op though, as mentioned already i think that price is too high. if you can negotiate it down a bit go for it. also mentioned before but crowncollection is the day date expert here (and posted here)

Not a dollar over $20K unless you have $8K to burn for the exact watch your mom wants.
