Rolex 14000m Good deal?

Its a bit of a drive for me but this pawn shop has a Rolex 9,6,3 blue Air King.
I absolutely love that watch. I'm considering pulling the trigger for around 2400 or 2500$. The shop said my 2400 offer is not too off. They are asking 2800$ But the downer is it appears the crystal has a chip or two. Take a look at the 12 and 1 o clock positions. Either the ring is chipped or its the crystal. I believe its the crystal. Is it worth getting for 2400 or 2500$. I know that is the desirable combo. But how much is it going to be to get that crystal swapped out for a new sapphire?

If you don't want an aftermarket crystal it'll probably be about $400USD from RSC.

If it were me I'd leave it. I do like it at $2800 or under.

Really? Good Lord 400$. A service would be around that. 600$ or so. What I want to know is how that crystal got chipped in the first place. I have hit several of my sapphire watches and no scratch or chip.

Edges of sapphire get chipped frequently, especially on those where the crystal sits higher above the bezel. Sometimes it is simply a matter of the habits of the owner who may have a repetitive process that exposes the edge, like resting the arm a certain way while driving that contacts the door lever, etc.

Crystals are usually about a hundred bucks when included with a full service. I wouldn't worry too much about edge chips unless they are severe.

Why? A pawn shop is bricks and mortar and covered by more laws than can be imagined.

That looks like damage of some kind on the rehaut and dial between, 12 and 2. I'd pass without much clearer pics of that area.

Yeah I agree with you. I will just keep looking around. I don't want a headache watch. Like that Air king from before. As for Pawn Shops. They are mostly safe. I have a personal friend of mine who has his own shop for over the past decade. Its a tough business, you deal with a lot of strange characters. But the laws are good. Downer is some shops can get burned. He had a gold Rolex that turned out to be stolen and gave it back to the real owner respectively. It happens. That why you gotta check the S/N in the database before buying from strangers in that business.

What data base?
Pawn Owners got no idea in general if it’s stolen. But every night they must by law send all buys and loans to police.
Buys must be held for 15 days in the store.
The police check buys/pawns against their stolen list and via a judge remove the item.

Looks like rust or corrosion. Who knows what condition the movement is in. Too risky

Yeah I chose to pull the trigger on this beautiful 14000m black dial with box and papers for 2550 off ebay. Should be getting it soon.

Did you get an acceptable explanation about the discrepancies?

Not really the guy on phone was kind of useless. He said the watch is in good shape. I should have asked to speak with his boss and that it was an 3 and a half hour drive too. But that chipped scared me, which is why I bought this 14000m instead with box and papers too. Much better deal

Well the one I bought did have some issues, I just dropped it off to my Rolex AD at Hamilton's in PBG mall. The watch has some hairs or dust on the dial and has some finger prints on the back of the sapphire crystal and it is a bit chipped up. The services is 600$ plus $100.45 for the new sapphire Crystal. I bought the watch for 2550 but the seller is going to give me 350 or 400 back to help pay for my setback and apparently didn't notice it on the dial. To be fair the seller does sell a lot of watches. Still though 2900 OTD for a Box and Papers watch is not bad and it is going to look great. Just sucks that I have to wait 3 weeks for my watch that I have not even got to wear yet.

You could make a few $ back selling the box and tag since that box style came out in 2005 and that watch didn't come with a red chronometer tag. So neither likely belong with the watch.

Actually that is the right box. Right in late 2004 the dealers started getting those boxes. Starting with the late F serials. That box is a very early version of those boxes. That watch was sold in late December of 2004. It is the right box. Check out this link. It explains a lot about the change. Mind you the box in the article is for a Sub and not for an air king or oyster perpetual/date.
http://luxurytyme.com/en/rolex-relat...ng-circa-2005/
As for the tag, the dealer might of just thrown it in. A friend of mine used to work for a AD back in 2004 and so on. And they remember both boxes very well. It really was a crap shoot on what box they decided to give a person.

Where in that article does it say that dealers were giving out new style boxes earlier than January 2005?

"it’s hard to say when exactly Rolex instituted this change – some say it was in January, while others say it was mid-way through the F series production."
Ultimate no one really knows. But I am certain that it came with that box. It is a late F series.
I did find a thread that apparently the crossover year was late 2004. https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.p...stion-2004-Sub Point is that some people got the new box and others got the old. Unless someone has a time machine we going to have and endless conversation on this. Either way I like my box.

You are right. That box is newer. The large pockets came out in 2013 and the green color is brighter too. I will admit I was wrong. I still like the box though.
Either way the paper is legit and matches.

Crystal is only $180 for a GMT. I had this done in August in BH.
