VC Overseas vs AP ROO help

Hello all,

A few months ago I celebrated a big life event and bought my grail watch, a AP ROO Safari. Although I love looking at the watch in my watch box, I don't wear it as much as I'd like to because it's a little more chunky and brash than I am use too. Am I crazy for thinking about selling the Safari and going with the VC Overseas chrono?

If it was a ceramic diver would say AP, there is one on sale in Germany at a very reasonable price on chrono24, but between these 2 I say VC

I’d keep the Safari and pass on the VC. Such a classic look and very cool ROO on the hornback.

+1 with Ken's comments. Tough to beat the looks of the Safari

I like the OG Safari but I'm sweet on the VCO too. If you don't wear the AP I would switch, that Deep Stream is cool but I'd get it on a MC bracelet.

I have a feeling you'd also flip the overseas chrono. Do you have a Daytona?

i would only get rid of that AP for the new VC chronograph.... maybe

I prefer the design of the new, plus in-house movement, better looking dials, and quick change strap system.

I like the previous gen. VC you posted too, just not enough to consider trading an AP for it.

If you don't wear it much, it's time to sell and move on.

Kinda where I am at. It's beautiful, but if you don't wear it enough, get something that you will.

Especially during the honeymoon phase.

I am personally more of a AP RO fan that a ROO which IMO are to big, chunky and in your face. I have owned a VC OC and they are a lovely watch that are the exact opposite of the ROO. Indeed they more in line with the ROC (if I am not mistaken they both use a 3rd party F Piguet Chrono module.

Note the VC resale is worse than the AP, it just doesn't seem to have the same appeal so if your a flipper beware

If it were me and you intend to keep the watch I would do it, then again I'd probably take AP Royal Oak Chrono over the VC. If you go for the VC you will get a Haute Horologie brand, a very stealthy watch which doesn't need baby'd the same way as an AP. That thing is bullet proof

Lastly don't go for the deep stream, go SS Blue dial on bracelet - it POPS!. You can pick up a big date older model (much better IMO) preowned LNIB for a steal and put some of that extra AP cash to good use

Whats everyone's thoughts on trading in watches? One option I have is to trade in my Safari and take a small hit. Do you guys trade in watches like this or sell them outright?

I have bought and sold on forums but only watches that are sub $5k but nothing of similar value to my AP Safari.

I have traded in for convenience but depends on the price. If the delta is over £1K then I'd sell it privately, but unless you are known on a forum the main option is ebay which has it's own risks and hassles.

If I were going to trade in that Offshore it would have to be for the newer Overseas chrono.

VCO fits better.

The ROOs are a bit chunky, however, Out of the 3 iterations of the ROO safaris, in my opinion you have the best version. Love the hornback leather strap

If the size of the ROO doesn’t suit but there must of been something about the AP that draw you to it have you not considered the ROC?

I would move the AP if it is not being worn much and you do not feel strongly about it. I prefer the VC but on the bracelet. Buy the VC pre-owned and complete. You should get a great deal on it. Don't flip or it will hurt your feelings.

Judging by your picture, This may be more of a situation where you prefer a thinner, slightly more dressy watch that fits under a cuff better. If that’s the case, and you don’t want to keep the Safari for more casual situations, I think you have two options. It is possible (although I think unlikely) that you would like the look better on a regular strap (not a hornback) if the overall “bulk” seems too much. And if you can’t try this at an AD, AP bands has relatively inexpensive ones. Certainly easier and cheaper to change a strap than a watch.

But the more likely scenario seems to be that the case is too thick for your liking. So if that’s the problem, I’ll echo the comments about considering a ROC as well. I have a first generation ROC 25860 and VCOC 49140 and love them both. The VCs are cheaper pre-owned and to me are a little more suited to everyday wear because of the greater WR, antimagnetic case, and differences in finishing. Depending on which models you consider, strap options are typically greater with VCOC (rubber, leather and bracelet). But to me, a ROC and VCOC look best on a bracelet anyway.

I agree with the other comments on this thread. If you're drawn to the VC Overseas Chrono, then why not try out a Royal Oak Chronograph?

If I'm trying to be objective - the VC is the better value as it's a lot cheaper than the AP, with the same base FP 1185 movement, has better WR, a big date and antimagnetic properties. If you buy right, you won't lose your shirt on resale. That said, the AP's finish is sublime - and if you're drawn to the Safari, you'll still have the same DNA and get to appreciate the amazing bracelet.

If you go for the ROC, I would try to find a 39mm one if you can. I'm not a huge fan of the 41mm references.

I also agree with the other points on the thread. Both are nice and I'd pick the AP over the VC in a heartbeat, but if it isn't moving mountains for you then maybe it is time to move on.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts, opinions, and comments. I decided to sell the Safari and get the VC. Took delivery of the VC and absolutely love it! No regret at all!!!

This piece is truly beautiful and is appropriate for virtually any occasion.
