That reminds me.
I saw a WWII Laco B-Uhr, with the original leather strap.
The strap was so large that I have to believe that it was meant to be worn on the leg. And I am taking into consideration the thickness of the leather fleece coat and pants that pilots wore. I have not been able to find a photo of a German WWII pilot to confirm this.

Of course now everyone is wearing them on there wrists.

I agree. Watches these days are far too small. I like to know I'm wearing a watch, so I bought a Musk for the wife, and a Diesel Grand Daddy for myself.
