Three Vintage Seikos

This month has been very good being able to acquire several watches from a Rolex 1655 Explorer ll to a Breitling AOPA 806 to name a few.

This week i got these highly collectible Seikos as follows:

1. A very rare, clean and unmolested Seiko 6246 9000. Initially this Grand Seiko model was originally called the
Seikomatic Chronometer and houses the first automatic movement, caliber 6200 introduced in 1966. It has 39 jewels and oscillates at 19800 bph. All Grand Seikos were hand polished.

2. Next is a King Seiko 4402 8000 model also in very good condition. This Seiko was manufactured in the Daini factory during the late 60s at a time when Seiko was winning the chronometer competition in Switzerland. The watch is powered by the caliber 4402a hand wound movement, hacking, 25 jewels and oscillates at 18000 bph.

3. Last is another King Seiko 5626 5060 also in very good condition. These models came out in 1969 together with the first quartz watches made by Seiko. The square cased King Seiko that i got is quite scarce because most produced that year had traditional "Grand Seiko style" cases. The 25 jewel 5600 automatic movement is hi-beat oscillating at 28000 bph.

Those are gorgeous. I’ve been getting the Seiko bug and have been researching and reading lots on vintage models. I’d like to get one someday. Thanks for sharing.

I had a vintage Seiko summer fling this past summer and picked up some real cuties. Here’s a couple of them:

5146-7010 Presmatic a 1969 gem with linen dial, 30 jewels, 28.8k bph, hand wind and hackable. It has a cool feature where you press an insert inside the crown to change the date. Equal to or above King Seiko but less known as they were produced for only about 2 years.

6206-8040 Seikomatic gold plate day/date from 1965. This went for ¥12,500 and was a quality piece for Japanese salarymen. Cool Kanji only date wheel.

Thanks. Seikos are really good value for money. Quality build and reliable movement is a combination that is hard to beat.

Very nice Seikos. I have a lot of love for vintage Seiko. If I ever figure this imgur thing I'll post some pics too.

Ok, so maybe I figured it out.

Here's my mint World Time.

And my 6156-8000 with a super clean case and best of all a faceted crystal.

And a diver (6105-8000) for good measure.

Thanks FTX I. One thing with Seiko, they have many collectible models to keep you busy hunting for quite sometime.

Here's another, a little more pedestrian (if that's he right word), this is my 6306 from the late 1970's. From what I understand these Japanese domestic market 6306's had a shorter production run than their international bother the 6309. And with my Seikos, new and old, I'm always opting for those that have a kanji day wheel.

That is a well preserved 6306 Jay. One difference is the 6309 in non hacking unlike the 6306.

And a fresher picture of my 6156, taken Monday (as you can see from the date display).

This case, and with the faceted crystal, make this watch like nothing else you can find in the market today. Another part of my collection focuses on modern higher end horology and to be honest this guy gives me as much, if not more, pleasure than any of those.

For those of you following along, get your toes wet. These are all fantastic watches and prices when you compare with the rest of the vintage market are generally a steal.

Indeed. And also the calibres differ in the number of jewels, 17 versus 21, with the 6306 having the 21. I did also read somewhere that the 6309 is actually heavier by 6 or 8 grams.

It's a pretty clean watch but it does have one pretty big ding on the case which you can't see from this picture. It doesn't bother me, the watch is about the same age as I am and I have a few scrapes and dings too!

Those Seikos are robust and can handle all kinds of abuse. I met one military guy who has worn his 6309 everyday for 20 years and was serviced once only due to a broken crystal.

That's a beautiful World Time!!!! I've had the same watch since the early 70's when I was in middle school. A friend of the family brought it back from Vietnam. It's been overhauled once. The crystal seems hard to fit, several were cracked during replacement.

Thank you. That's a pretty cool story and you must have been a pretty cool kid with that watch back in middle school. I've read on other forums that there's appears to be some difficulty fitting the crystal. Fingers crossed I never have to deal with that.

Do you have a picture of your World Time?

No pictures I'm afraid. I've never been able to figure it out!!! My World Time is identical to yours, I just checked the back for a model # but looks like just a S/N is displayed. I don't have the original bracelet, when I received it there was one of those hippie wide leather bands on it which were popular back then.

There was a thread here which showed the OP touring the Seiko museum in Japan. Numerous watches were displayed one of which was one identical to ours.

Auto Seikos of this era were fantastic watches. Then the quartz craze happened, yuk!!! A Grand Seiko may be on my wish list!!

Regards, Bill
