5960p-001 Grey unloved

Dear all, just wondering why this model is so unloved by the Patek community?

It’s the very first in-house automatic movement, first flyback, the central chronograph hand can be operated continuously to serve as conventional seconds hand without harming the mechanism (for those who love to see their watches move), and the first to feature the 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph indicators in the same subdial, the easiest to read annual calendar, day/night indicator, power reserve. Everything is so legible.

The 40 mm size is, in today’s standards, a safe positioning. Not thicker than a Rolex Submariner.

Elegant pump pushers.

Beautiful sunburst grey dial with white contrasting bullseye that gives it an interesting look while staying subtle compared to the blue.

The bullseye is so loved on the 5980.

It has all the winning points.

But it is currently being dumped everywhere, a very much unloved piece in the market as we speak.

Yes, production spanned 8 years (I am not going to discuss the price here). But so did all the Nautilus. Nautilus, although so mass marketed and in abundance compared to the 5960 (this is platinum!) has been hotter than ever! This 5960 (first original grey) has just been kicked in the butt. Very unjustified in my opinion.

Just wanted to hear from you your thoughts.

Here are some pics from mine and from the web

I don't think its unloved it's just that there are lots of options in the 50k-60K price range. I like it, don't love it, would get the black dial version if I were looking for one. I've heard the chrono counter referred to as a roulette wheel.

I've heard the white face version referred to as the "clown eye", but I can see roulette wheel as well. Terms of endearment I suppose.

Agree that it's a nice watch loaded with cool functions, but significant other options at the price point, especially if one looks beyond PP.

The watch has its merits , hey I bought it twice. My favorite appeal of the watch was the weight , it feels good on the wrist. Maybe is because it’s an in between watch (not AC only /not PCC either) with a lack of second hand. But I still think is cool watch, like it , just like other members said there are other options at that bracket

I think it's a great watch. 5960 in general is great bang for buck. Disclaimer: I own a 5960A.

The 5960 is a great watch and the gray dial 5960P will be remembered as an iconic watch that started the AC/Chrono watch series for Patek.

However like others have said, there are other watches that compete with it. The blue and black dial 5960Ps were produced for a shorter time period and are rarer. Also the blue and black dial 5905Ps have updated dials and pushers and it seems people are more attracted to the newer 5905 when they are looking for a Patek AC/Chrono.

Also it is hard to compare the popularity of a dress watch with a sports watch like the Nautilus. Even with Patek, there has been a growing interest in sports watches with a corresponding decreased interest in dress watches over the years.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. The reason why I ask is because I have been visiting various dealers lately, trying to look out for the 5170P and started discussing about the 5960P. One dealer followed by the others, all said this is a very very unappreciated watch at the moment and I was very surprised to hear that. Have a good end of the week to you all

5960's design is not to my taste. I'd prefer blue or black dial as well.

5960p-001 Grey unloved

Truth be told, I have a 5960/R with black dial and Black Chrono dial. No roulette wheel. I find it to be a beautiful watch that is easily worn casually as well as more dressed up.

I bought mine second hand and for the money there is not much that comes close in the Patek line up.

I have not found anything yet I would want to trade it for.

Just got one myself, and I love it. Good size, thick with a nice presence. Formal and casual. Can't beat black/rose, and I love the blacked out date windows - much better dial integrity for me.

It is probably my favorite watch in my collection and gets worn a lot. Fits perfectly in both dress and casual situations. Plus, it offers so many useful features.

I'd be hard pressed to ever let this one go!

I sold mine - they only thing about it I don't like are the piston pushers. Same issue on my 5204. I thought I would grow to like them, but I didn't.

A shame as I think the 5960 is otherwise an amazing reference.

To me the 5960 in PM or steel is one of the coolest watches period...Just does not get any better in my book. For the same reason I just dumped an AP and full gold Speedmaster for one...

Congrats! That’s the best version of the 5960p, IMHO.

I think a lot of people prefer the black to the blue?

Less black were produced and this commands a premium compared to the gray and blue. I think that Patek blue dial with the platinum combo is killer. Personally, I would buy the blue over black cause I’m a sucker for blue dials.

The answer to your question has not yet been addressed in this thread..

PP made too may of them and flooded the market with Platinum, rose gold, yellow gold, white gold, SS, bracelet, Tang Buckle, PP Crest Buckle and every color dial in the rainbow.

Around the same time they switched from the Geneva seal to their own in house PP seal. The quality control has been horrific across the board and the 5960 had all sorts of problems like:

Stuck date wheels
Chrono reset problems
Scratches on movement parts
Faulty Tang Buckle that opened and caused watch to fall to ground

As a result of all of these factors, the watch is the only modern PP I know of that has been discontinued and sells for 50% or more off of the retail price at time of discontinuation. Most models tend to go UP in value when they are discontinued, but the 5960 fell and continues to fall.

I have seen them actually sell for 40k recently with box and papers.

In reference to PVR's comment on the 5960P having lost 50% of value, it is important to note that when the 5960P gray dial was originally introduced, US retail price was $57K. By the time it was discontinued, US retail price had skyrocketed to $95K. Essentially the same watch purchased at different time periods had a retail price difference of almost $40K USD.

Other watches that started production in the mid-2000s and were produced for 10 years also had a similar price increase.

So if the pre-owned 5960P is being offered for $50K today, did the watch really lose close to 50% value or a mere 15% value? It really depends on when you purchased the watch.

So once again, I think it is a great watch and there is a reason it is still being produced in other metals.
