1680 Red Sub Dial Authenticity
Looking to verify the authenticity of this red sub dial. Long story short, my dad's 1680 sub was serviced years (like 15 or so) ago and during the service the original dial was replaced with a 16800 version with WG surrounds. Hands were left original at the time. He didn't really notice at the time as it's always been a tool for him. Only when I started researching it did I recognize what happened. I've been wanting to restore it for a long time and came across this dial talking to a reputable jeweler who had this one in their "parts" bin from an older service. We haven't talked price yet, as I wanted to know forum member's thoughts on it's authenticity.
The old sub has a serial #2631...., so I believe this dial would even be the correct dial given its age. Finally, assuming it's authentic, who would you send it to to fix the terrible relume job? Thanks for any help. |

As an added detail, the jeweler is not stating the dial is either authentic or fake, but rather says they would send it to Rolex to verify. My concern is that if Rolex is sent the dial, they may end up keeping it if it's real. Is this a valid concern?
I haven't posted much, so someone please correct me if I've started this thread in the wrong forum. Thanks again for any advice. |

I’m curious what the pros think, but looking at the lume, I cannot imagine it is real.

The lume is pretty bad, but looking at it up close, I think it was just a terrible relume job at some point. The rest of the dial looks pretty accurate to me, but I’m far from an expert.

Looks looks an once OK mkIV open 6 1680 dial with a poor relume job.
I am curious how a 16800 dial fits in a 1680 as the movements are different?

The fact that a 16800 dial might not fit a 1680 had never crossed my mind. Nothing has been done to the watch since that service, so now I’m concerned that something worse than a dial swap was performed.
My father still has the watch, so I can’t post pics right now, but will try to do so once he sends it my way. Thanks for pointing that out. |

Looks like someone relumed it using a votive candle. Even if authentic you must go better
