5513 supposed spider has me perplexed

Gentlemen, hoping to tap into your expertise...You're knowledge is really, truly appreciated here.

Considering this 5513 watch only.

Supposedly Spider. Although not the nicest breaks I have seen.

Serial is 94..

The year is 1986.

The price is $6700 usd

Do you guys like it? Is it nice? Is spider nice or doe it get annoying? Does it get more annoying over time time? Is the price good?

Polished? Lugs seem strong to me...

How's the dial?

I like the watch but as an investment does it make sense?

Really do appreciate any information

Thank you!IMG_20200529_185920_01.jpg

I like spider dials, but that one is not appealing to me, personally. Still, you shouldn't be asking other people about things that are totally subjective, buy it if you like it and the dial makes you happy.

Nobody can tell you if it's a good investment, >20% of people are out of work and the stock market is on a joyride.

A nice spider dial will cost more like $9k.

Maybe just me, but i can’t see any spidering on that dial. I see plenty of scratches on the crystal though

I have a spider dial 16750 GMT - ~ 90% of the time when wearing it you cant see the spider lines at all - you have to get the angle just right before they reveal themselves, as a pleasant surprise

Keep in mind that a spider dial is a defect that has been hyped by sellers in order to create a market for damaged goods. To each their own.

It's alright. Don't buy it as an investment though. The value is unlikely to tank, but it might not go up much either.

I'd invest some of that cash in a manicure.

If that's the dial, doesn't look like an actual spider dial. And I agree with the statement above, it's actually a damaged dial. But if you like it, you like it.

Could you get a better picture of the dial (showing the font of the 2 bottom lines) ?
I feel like this is the second generation of dials and these were not really prone to « spider »...

Kind regards,

Based on these pictures, I would agree on the scratched crystal as opposed to a spider dial... Don't know if seller is private of professional, but I would not expect a professional seller to advertise as spider dial.

Good luck in the hunt!

Weird pictures. Yes, spider effect sometimes show in a certain angle only. Ask the seller for a video. That should sort it out ;)

In answer to your concerns -

No I do not like it and the greatest majority of collectors do not like the corroded or cracked dials. Personally, for me, it is defective and annoying as you mentioned.

Does it get more annoying with time - probably not since if you buy one, you'll probably sell it shortly after the purchase so you won't have to look at it too long.

My advice, forget dealer driven hype and find a nice watch with a nice dial.

Love my spider

And as mentioned above, the spider is not visible 90% of the time, same watch with another bezel:

In the first pic has a mouse been eating the bezel?

To be honest, I wouldn’t be interested in this watch, mostly because I don’t like the look of the case. Granted, I don’t have my glasses on and I’m on my mobile, but don’t the crown guards look unnaturally chunky?

Not necessarily. Here are the crown guards on my 5512 that I'm very confident has never been polished. Perhaps the 5513 in question just has an unpolished case, although more scrutiny would be needed. They look similar to my 5512.

Case issue aside .... I wouldn't even consider that 5513. That dial is very unattractive, IMHO.

Not sure that's an opinion. Unless you can prove otherwise, that's just a fact.

The poster called it “damaged” goods. It’s a defect or error by the manufacture that wasn’t supposed to happen. We value error mint strikes and sport trading cards much higher that the normal version. That’s a fact. That’s how I see these spiders.

I understand your point, but an error card, or an error quarter, comes out of the printing plant/mint that way. These came out as intact, correct, non-cracked dial.

Let’s put it this way: If there was no manufactured hype about “Spider Dials”, or if you weren’t a collector/enthusiast and you woke up one morning and saw that your Submariner dial fractured, I’m sure you would return it to Rolex that afternoon and demand a new one. Because dealers like Crown & Caliber want to sell damaged dials by propagating the myth that these are somehow special doesn’t make them not-damaged dials.

I personally don’t see these as having value for their “unique” aging. Unlike other forms of aging, such as a true tropical (not the moisture damage that far too often is incorrectly use to describe) the look really isn’t pleasing to most and it’s why they are priced at a discount rather than a premium.

The dial reminds me of craquelure of old paintings.
