My First SOTC/Whats your collection rationale.

Keen to hear from forum members who have some sort of rationale behind their watch collections.

I accept and see nothing wrong with simply buying what you like and have done this for the majority of my 10 years of interest in watches. Some have stayed, many have moved on so that I could try out and enjoy others (funds are limited after all!).

The above said, I recently find I’m down to 1 watch from each brand and fancy keeping this going as my collection theme. It seems a fun, challenging and interesting way to ensure diversity and breadth.

See below the SOTC (my first so go easy, haha)

AP Diver-my most recent, new to me, purchase from Nov 2023

Rolex Daytona-new from the AD in Jan 2023

Nomos Tangomat-my first expensive watch from around 2013/14 (I think).

Tudor Pelagos 39

Longines-18th Birthday present from my Grandma and no idea what the model is?)

So what changes do I see?

Short term, I’m thinking about swapping the Nomos for a Weltzeit (white/silver dial still) and the Tudor isn’t getting worn much so will likely find a new home sooner or later.

Medium term, perhaps an IWC, likely a pilot. I have enjoyed a Pilot Chrono before.

Long term, I’d love a Patek 5524G, maybe a VC of some sorts.

What would you add?

Thanks for taking the time to read and keen to hear from you all, Niki

Appreciated. Being honest it doesn’t get worn at all but it’ll nonetheless never get sold as it’s far too sentimental.

Grandma had great taste. Love those lines, cool watch.

Enviable collection. I also buy what I like, and what I like changes sometimes. Some watches are keepers, others I get to enjoy and then trade away.

I think we've all got one of those in our collection. For me, it's a Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph that was my deployment watch... On my wrist for hundreds of flight hours over three oceans, a few seas, lots of straights, a canal or two & approx. 34,000 nautical miles.

To answer your original question: I like what I like. I love the matte blue of the 116619LB & I love the "sunburst" of the gold 16233 dial. I love the matte white of my SARB035 & I love the complexity of the Citizen's dial.

Next on the docket is a PT DD36 because it's awesome.

Nice collection Niki

I think we all approach it from the same mindset, which is to “buy what you like”. That just varies a lot from person to person.

I recently trimmed my set down to 3 nicer (to me) watches that I’m quite happy to own.

I was able to get my Pap's watch that he wore the entire part of his life that I was alive. A gift from the RailRoad back in the 70s. I've been considering an Omega Railmaster to go with it to add to my collection. I'd lose every watch I had to keep that one. And it will never be worn (doesn't fit anyway). Used to love to watch the train go around the tracks on it when I was a kid.

Watch I want to add.

My rationale has changed a bit. I only get complications I use and I have to have dial variants (color/texture). That’s about it. If it doesn’t get worn, it goes.

I used to have chronographs, duo dates, more dressier pieces to fit every occasion. When I realized I wasn’t wearing them and half my collection value tied up in them, I sold them off.

There is a design language I prefer. I just finally embraced it.

Nice collection and I would look at some of the usual suspects for fun. A Omega Speedmaster, Omega Seamaster, a quartz Grand Seiko.

My First SOTC/Whats your collection rationale.

Awesome collection.

My rationale for my collection is irrational. It started out being a simple desire to have a Submariner, Speedmaster, and some sort of dress watch. But that went out the window pretty quickly.

I had the Submariner and Speedmaster as planned. But then I added another diver (Seamaster). Why? I don’t know, but I love it and wear it all the time.

I still wanted a dress watch, but decided on a DJ41 instead, which is fine. That works as a dress watch.

After that, it snowballed from there. I got “the call” from an AD. They offered me a GMT BLNR on a jubilee. Do I need the watch? Of course not. But I wanted it, so I bought it, and I love it.

Who knows what’s next?!?!
