Hodinkee x Grand Seiko SBGM239

Hodinkee released a GS today that looks like a stunner!

It's basically a SBGM221 with a matte blue dial AND a matte steel bracelet.

Of course though, it's a limited edition of just 500.

Got my order in immediately at 10 AM Eastern.

It's a beauty, just a pinch disappointed that they didn't improve on the water resistance, it's still just 3 bar.

Love the SBGM, love blue dials, and I loooove steel bracelets. Win all arounds for the most part!

I bought one. The dial color and layout looks like the SBGM031 from ~8 years ago. But I like this one better. So I’m a buyer...not sure yet whether I’m in the November batch or the February batch.

Two things I am a little nervous about and want to see in the metal:

1. Bracelet/case junction...looks weird in some photos
2. GMT hand and minute hand alignment. ~80% of my GS GMT’s have to be returned immediately because the GMT hand runs ahead/behind the minute hand by up to 5 minutes either way.

I also picked one up!

I always found the serif 24hr ring font on the SBGM221 to stick out like a sore thumb. Kudos to Hodinkee for switching it up. Subtle yet massive improvement.

What does your order confirmation say? I ordered at 10:01 and it says "this item will ship within 4-12 business days".

+1 on the bracelet/case junction... I thought the same thing. Hopefully it looks a bit more flush in person.

Is the GS logo applied or painted. In the unboxing video it kinda lookedpainted which was weird bit in some of the pics it looks applied. I would expect it to be applied

My order confirmation says the same thing, 4-12 business days. Odd because in the item description it promises overnight shipping. Maybe that’s from the moment it leaves their door :)

Regarding the bracelet/case transition...I figure if it’s OK, then I’ll be happy..would be difficult to achieve Rolex precision at this price point, especially for a first bracelet model on this case...but if it’s really bad, then lug holes, baby!

Logo is applied, in the video I recall the narrator mentioning the machining.

My order also says 4-12 business days. I was waiting on the countdown page when it went live and it was listed as "pre order" when I paid.

After submitting my order it was listed as available for order.

Not sure why, but I'm not too worried. I got my order number and stuff.

Hoping it'll get sent out a little earlier than 4-12 business days though xD

Ordered one too. How can we all have gotten an order in and there are only 500 available?

First I’ve ever heard that phrase, and yet I agree 100%.

Lovely dial.

I'm a little perplexed by the apparent mismatch of the thin/polished lugs coupled with the plain brushed bracelet, but maybe not an issue in real life.

As for the family photos on the website, so strange........

Maybe they wanted to show the watch "in action" as opposed to in still photos with plain backgrounds?

I think it's a nice touch, not sure what's strange

A dad and kid smiling and playing with random shots of the watch. Why anyone would think of their watch on their wrist during such family time is beyond me...in what way does that moment have anything to do with the watch? It just seems so hokey, corny and lame. Kind of like Hodinkee, when you think about it. ;-)

Or, to put it succinctly, “strange”.

All IMHO of course. Reasonable minds can disagree.

Nice looking watch and Grand Seiko does it well. I am starting to get fatigued with the LE/SE watches from Grand Seiko/Seiko. I am starting to get that felling I had years ago with Panerai and it is not a good thing.

Welp... might not be getting one after all. They canceled my order per the below message and now it's sold out. Following up with Hodinkee to understand what happened since I got an order confirmation and the charge is pending on my AMEX.

Quote:
Unfortunately, we were unable to process the previous order with the information that was provided, so we were forced to cancel it. You should see all associated charges being removed from your account. If you would like to attempt to repurchase the item, I would suggest trying a different payment method, as it appears that our system is not going to be able to verify the method that you used previously.

Please don’t use “the dog’s bollox” unless you’re British. You’ll just look like a plonker.

I've seen this concept elsewhere too... e.g. the most recent Apple keynote had videos of a family using the new products in their house. I'm not sure I understand the strategy behind it, but it doesn't bother me either.

Agreed! Was looking at some grey straps last night. I might pick up one from Hodinkee and pair it with the newer-style deployant from my Soko.

I generally agree, but I'm willing to cut them a bit of slack for their 60th. Hopefully it won't be a continuous trend.

Update: Hodinkee customer service was able to resolve the issue, and I should still be getting one from the first batch. Phew!
