C172 Crash at YKZ

Not too far from here at YKZ (Buttonville Municipal Airport). The video was uploaded two months ago but I saw this for the first time yesterday. Wow...

He seems eerily calm up until the very end. I hope he is ok.

I’m not a pilot, but this looks like it could’ve been easily avoided.

Probably will be used in a “how not to react” video in future flight classes

I’m a pilot. That guy should not have a license. If he does have one, I’ll be floored.
Using the yoke to steer the plane? He was chocking it before the plane could properly slow down and was not using proper rudder control.

I would venture to say he was in the early stages of training/solo hours.

Too bad.

Now that hurt. What caused the prop to start up?

It was always going, just slower. He was landing and started going left, he panicked, pushed the throttle all the way forward to get up in the air again, but instead just went right into the hangar. Hope he's okay.

As a pilot, I can spot several mistakes and I have a few theories about what went wrong.

To sum it up, I will agree with the previous poster that this guy is either a low time pilot or someone still training.

Some great points made above. It sounds like he'll survive and hopefully this can be a moment that helps others avoid the many errors seen here.

Richmond Hill (very close to YKZ) on June 18th, 2001

There certainly has, it seems. This is never the type of thing I look for but searching for info on the original post did uncover quite a bit, unfortunately.

With regards to safety in general aviation the following video always comes to mind.

Incredible be sustained only minor injuries. Reminds me of some crap you’d try in a video game. Let’s see if I can floor it across the grass and make it over the hangar.

Too bad.
Think it was he first solo, panic set in and went back to what he knew from driving. He also fire-walled it as well, trying to get back into the air at one point.

Shame his CFI will be the one taking a majority blame for this.

What's crazy about this also is the fact YKZ is in a Class E control zone. Aircraft must broadcast their intentions on 124.8.

He's very lucky it was seemingly calm at that time. Some days or moments there can be significant air traffic, even private jets.

Thankfully all he hit was the hanger. Albeit obvious where some of the mistakes were I'm interested in reviewing the AOPA accident case study on this. I'm sure it's only. Matter of time for that to come out.

There's an issue with the original video link so I'll share again from a different source.

Let’s hope not.

Would it be frowned upon if you pulled that on a carrier

My call sign in the Navy was.... Well that’s not important, but what some people said it SHOULD be is: “Bolter Bolter”

Navy/USMC pilots will know what I am talking about, anyone else will have to do some research

Luckily it wasn’t that! I would have had to get a sex change and move to Mozambique... the embarrassment would have been unbearable.

Gear actuator fractured and the left main wouldn’t come down. Tried many tricks allas couldn’t get them down... opted for belly landing with all wheels up.

Thank you for your service. Helos? I have about 400 hours rotary wing time, some of the most fun flying I ever did

Thank you for your service. I flew for your maple loving moose worshiping neighbors up north. Aurora and Buffalo, lots of Lear (c21) & King Airs and some rotary on the Griffon (although spent more time repairing it than flying it so not sure that counts)

Always been a Hornet pilot wannabe!
