Trade 5711A for 5980A

Considering trading in my 5711A for a 5980A straight up. Thoughts?

I would if I ….
Needed the chrono complication
Wanted a slightly bigger/thicker watch
Would enjoy looking at the 5980 more on my wrist

I personally like the beefier nautilus and a busier dial, however ….the simplicity and iconicness (not sure if that’s a word but I’ll use it) of the 5711 is also tough to beat.

Absolutely, yes, assuming they're in similar condition with similar paraphernalia.

I would not. Not a big fan of pushers on the Nautilus case and I'd miss 5711. The sports chrono to add (not trade into) is 5968 IMO.

I wouldn't as I like the slimness and simple dial of my 5711/1A. I am however considering trading my 5711/1R for a 5990/1R if the AD ever gets me one as that way I get a steel piece and a full rose complication piece without having to add any more cash!

Of course if you love the 5980 and are meh about the 5711 then of course go for it :-)

I probably wouldnt and this sounds ridiculous but i miss having a running seconds hand. Yes i know the 5980 has the vertical clutch but then ur essentially just running the chronograph all the time.

Does running the chrono all the time damage the watch?

What color dial are you considering? I owned a 5980 for a bit in blue, the monocounter chrono being in white really bothered me and resembled a CD. The white dial or the two tone and all RG solve this issue. Otherwise I preferred the weight of the 5980 to the 5711, felt sportier.

My preference is for the thinner watch.

I have the blue 5711 and am looking at a white 5980.

Common wisdom says no because of the vertical clutch. But I might be irritated by the subdial changing if I ran the chrono for a seconds hand.

This is true. It took a decade but, here, Patek stumbled onto the perfect sport chronograph.

If you find the 11 a bit plain then the 80 is a great choice, esp if you want that same blue, altho the 90 maybe even more so.
