Unscrewing the Crown - Question
How many of you, if any, hear the winding mechanism when you unscrew your crown?
Specifically referring to my Submariner 14060M, as I unscrew the crown, can hear the exact same sound from as if I am winding the movement. Neither my GMT nor Explorer do this, and in the 6 years I owned my Submariner find it hard to believe I am only noticing now. Still within the two-year warranty from a RSC service, so I'm thinking a return to RSC is in order. Thoughts? |

Hearing the ratchet when unscrewing the crown is not unusual. It is designed to freewheel and ratchet in that direction, which is the opposite of engaged and winding..

Well, it is on the way to RSC. There is also an unusual grinding sensation when winding now too (that was not there prior), so RSC can check that out as well as regulate to COSC (running 15 seconds fast). Still under warranty, which I might as well take advantage of just to be sure. |

If you are out of warranty, I wonder if in instances like this where something is suddenly different, if it is worth sending it in. Just as long as it is functioning well, are you really saving anything by sending it in before the function starts to become impaired. Is a possibly extra trip to the RSC more expensive than the extra damage done by waiting. I am sure that it would be difficult to know for sure, but food for thought.

But sometimes in life it's best to let sleeping dogs lay. Having said that, no brand new watch in an AD will feel like that when unscrewing the Crown. With that in mind, I would've sent it back as you have done especially with it still being covered by warranty. For the record I have sent watches back to the RSC immediately after service when it presents with a similar issue associated with the winding function of the Crown. I also make a point of checking the full spectrum of the winding function before taking delivery after a service due to prior experience and if it doesn't feel the same or better than a new watch, then it will straight back for rectification. It's a vexing question as to why it should be so, and probably a good one to ask a watchmaker as to why the results should be so variable for such a simple thing. |

My nearly brand new subc makes a clicking noise as I unwind the crown. Does everyone here spend time listening to their watches?

It's probably normal, but let me say this:
When I got my DJ41 new in June 2018, it did not make that clicking sound when unscrewing the crown. It ran perfect. FF to Fall 2018, watch now loses 6-7 seconds a day (somewhat erratically) and now makes a clicking sound when unscrewing the crown. Find watch has way low amplitude, still keeping poor time. I send it in to RSC. When it came back, not only did (does) it run perfect again, but that clicking sound is gone when I unscrew the crown. Take from that what you will. I'm not trying to discount anyone else's ideas. |

Very Normal. I think you feel it more than hear it.

This thread is over 2 years old. I'm sure OP has probably received this watch back from RSC by now

What was the result? I’ve had a number of watches, Rolex and non-Rolex, that made clicking sounds similar to winding the movement when unscrewing the crown.
I’m guessing it came back the same way? |
