Good watch habits?

Do you wind your watch everyday? Does it make it to faster/slower?

I just alternate mine daily, sometimes I hand wind the ones I don’t wear the next morning.

I've always made it a habit to rest my watches on the crown side and not the case to protect it from scratches.

I always place mine in a secure holder when not on the wrist. Either a watch box or winder is what I use. For now my winding slots are all turned off.

Never hand wind unless it is needed. The less you manipulate the crown the better.

If its been sitting idle, I wind it before putting it on, other than that I leave the crown alone.

I've read elsewhere that the automatic winding of the watch only accounts for around 20 - 30% of its requirements if you have a desk job, but given that I've never had an automatic watch lose time drastically, or stop on me after years of being a desk jockey, I put that down to something the myth busters could disprove.

Good watch habits?

Don’t wear it loose, it will help extend bracelet life and provide more efficient automatic winding.

Be extremely careful while handling the watch over hard surfaces like bathroom floors. A drop can be disastrous.

Tighten but do not over tighten the crown. It ain’t going to war.

Keep it clean and shiny. You will enjoy it more.

Be careful trying to catch that elevator or that store glass door with your left hand.

Get your money’s worth out of your most expensive watches by wearing the hell out of them.

I always put down my watches crown up, they lay more stable that way. I find that I cant keep hairlines on the case sides away anyhow.

Nice stand but the price for that thing is pretty steep.

I do not wind my watch daily, not a fan of putting unnecessary strain on the crown. When not in use, I lay it crown up on a suede tray by my nightstand. If I'm traveling, I place on the softest surface I can find in the hotel room

I keep my watches in used to be my bed to protect them from anything that will void resale value. So, since then I sleep on the floor beside watches occupied bed as a dog. But that is the benefit to my health - my back pain is gone. It's a win-win situation

On the more serious note: I keep them in the Woolf watch box, wash them at least once a week, winding them if needed(sopped) when ready to be wear.

I use a winder. I do not like to mess with the crowns if I can avoid it. While the modern watches seem more solid there, I have accidentally pulled a crown all the way out a few times over the years.

I have not wound or set my Daytona in three months. It is currently 3 seconds fast, but I know this is a watch forum and it's wrong to be impressed and happy about that.

I wear it daily, spend lots of time at a computer, and don't wear it for athletic endeavors or in bed (or athletic endeavors in bed ). It has never stopped.

So, I'm new to the Rolex world and am finding TRF to be incredibly informative and fascinating. Thank you all. This is another interesting thread.

Personally, I've been wondering for a while about whether it's best/okay to wind in both directions, as I was taught as a kid (i.e., wind clockwise, but instead of taking your fingers off the crown as you reset your finger position, turning the crown counter-clockwise as you reset your fingers to do another clockwise wind) or always wind in a clockwise direction. I realize the counter-clockwise wind does nothing but does it have the potential to damage the watch?

But, now it seems you shouldn't touch the crown at all!!! Is this really true? Is the crown on a Rolex really that fragile?

It'd be interesting to see the overlap of folks who think a Rolex should be treated like a safe queen and folks who think a Rolex is a tool watch that should spend its time covered in mud, sea water, and sweat versus the folks who think you should never touch a crown and those who wind their watches manually.

Doesn't that defeat the definition of self winding?

Hi sorry for the late reply, but I realized my watch always loses around 2-4 seconds everyday. Its been two weeks or so and it lost around 70 seconds++. Give it a month and it'll lose around 2 mins more. Is it common to re-set the time your watch every month or so? I'm ok if my watch is slightly off, but if its more than 5 mins off then it'll cause some problems

PS, Mine is a Tudor BB41

I wonder them as needed only. I rotate between 3 watches every week or so, they they really only ever need to be “started up” once a week.
