Preceramic fragility
Picked up some pre-ceramics lately and i love how they look and feel but I gotta be honest I feel more cautious wearing them versus my ceramics, worried I'll ding the bezel insert in particular. Perhaps you get used to it?

The more dinged worn a bezel, or Rolex for that matter, they better. At least they don’t crack like the ceramic.

My 16610 has been my daily wearer for almost 10 years now and it has a scratch on the bezel and I’m surprised it doesn’t have more for all the times I’ve bumped it. It doesn’t really bother me but what bothers me more is a dirty watch so I like to keep it clean.

Haven't managed to ding mine. Has a minor hairline scratch. But new inserts are like $75 so I don't sweat it.

I have so many watches that do not have ceramic bezels and never had any issues. Just because one may have a ceramic bezel why would they suddenly be haphazard?

This is the first time i´ve read that someone find the five-digits more fragile.

I am beginning to understand why an expensive watch may not be for everyone...

Ask my dad. He wears the hell out of his. I've had to do the grey scotchbrite thing on the 12 side of the bracelet a couple of times because the brushing had disappeared. No fading or scratches to the bezel. Our weather is crap though but ceramic is obviously wholly unnecessary here.

I’ve had my 16610 for almost 9 years now. I am hard on it. I wear it for, basically, everything without a second thought. The bezel and sapphire are fine, scratch and dent free.

I’d never trade any of my five digits for a 6.

Believe me, they will take far more punishment than the dinner plate material used in the current references. There have been several accounts of breakage on the ceramic bezels here on this forum. Not so much for the aluminum inserts. The move to ceramics marks the move from tools to jewelry. Not saying the new versions are not tough, but it’s not debatable ceramic is more prone to outright failure.

Ceramic bezel inserts can crack under enough force, as when it's dropped on a tile floor, and is both expensive and difficult to install.

6 digit Rolex are more robust than 5 digit. Solid links, far better clasp, and ceramic bezels are all major improvement over the 5 digits. I under stand the love of 5 digits but saying they're better than the dinner plate material of the 6 digits is just dumb.

Lol. That’s because most on this forum are afraid to take them in the shower and 99% here wear them as jewelry. The Daytona is especially easy to chip as the side is exposed. The other thing is the ceramic is pure marketing gimmick. 40 year old technology. Rolex is late to the game and yes I’ll take the aluminum inserts any day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

There not more robust my friend. They just feel more robust. The lighter bracelets are held together by the same pins in the new ones. The difference is that there is actually some functional purpose for a lighter bracelet. But as they moved more into the jewelry category, and costs went up people began to expect a more solid feel. Yes for most desk divers here, you will not experience any problems. If I had a 6 digit in my wrist it may last 1 month at best without the crockery shattering into a million pieces. Candidly, I consider the 5-digits are better suited for “rough & tumble “ activity activity than the 6-digit models.

C'mon. I don't own any modern Rolex, I'm a 4 and 5 digit owner, but the ceramic is durable enough for everyday use. |

Well. I wear mine doing what ever I’m doing for the day. If I’m mountain biking, well then that’s what my 16610 is doing same for hiking and climbing. If it’s yard work, it’s the Rolex, if it’s the office Rolex again. Most here reach for the gshock and have no idea that these watches are capable of handling. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
