My dad had a 300SL. Myself and my three brothers would sit in the back with no restraints of any kind. We held on to the rail which goes around the rear portion of the car. We were all under ten years old. This was around 1960 or so. My dad let my mother drive the car from Washington DC to Baltimore. She made the entire trip with the emergency brake on ... Dad wasn't too happy. It was a great car, but as a small child I didn't really appreciate it other than I liked the red interior and the grab rail ... oh and the crazy doors opening up was always a thrill to see. It somehow made the car seem special.

My memory is fuzzy on this, but I recall that he did some amateur racing for Mercedes in the 1950s. He was an Air Force pilot. He flew Hellcats off Air Craft Carriers. Anyway, the story goes that due to his involvement with the racing, that Mercedes supported his getting the car in Europe. He had it shipped to the U.S. when he came back to the states. When we moved from Maryland to Florida (Patrick Air Force Base) he sold the car to a dentist since he was afraid the Florida salt air on the coast would destroy the car. In the 60s he got a first generation Porsche 912. He kept that car for a long time. I also remember he had a serious dislike of Corvettes. He called them "Plastic Pigs". Boy would he be surprised to see what they've turned into.

One more tidbit and I'll leave it at that. It may be of some interest what an original owner of such a car was like. As I mentioned, my dad was a pilot. He was a fighter pilot in WWII and flew missions over the pacific. We were told as kids that he was a fighter ace, but I can't find his name mention as an ace. But there is a book on fighter aces in which several of his dog fights were described in detail. The book is "McCampbell's Heroes" and my dad's name was John J. Collins.

The claim is that John Collins was credited with sinking 3 ships and taking out 5 aircraft in dog fights. He almost lost his life. He had his landing gear blown off and half a wing taken out. This left shrapnel in his legs (which he had still in his legs till the end of his life). Somehow he made it back to the aircraft carrier and crashed onto the wooden flight deck. I have pictures of his being pulled from the Hellcat. The propeller penetrated the flight deck and made it to a lower level. They made a clock out of the propeller and instruments from the crashed plane. They had a wooden base made from pieces of the flight deck. While he was still in recovery in the ships hospital, they presented him with the clock.

He had no animosity with regards to Germans which I think is a positive thing. He also told us stories how some in his squadron would fly up into the clouds and drop their bombs due to fear of being killed. He was firmly against ratting on his fellow pilots and never made any attempt to do anything about this behavior. The war experiences were a major aspect of his self image for the rest of his life. Oh, and did have a Rolex.

Interesting to see the true non-glamorous side of owning and driving a vintage sports car. Long start up procedure with grueling systems check and warm up, slow and difficult shifting, and acceleration almost as good as a modern sedan. But the visceral driving experience that requires 110% attention that makes the driver feel connected with the machine. There is nothing better.

Oh, and what a beautiful watch to round out the experience.
