Vintage Rolex Ads

I love these old ads that I find on eBay. I got this one because it spoke to me the most. It's from May 1970 New Yorker. I was in IKEA today and found a nice frame for it.

Fantastic!!

I love these as well, and need to "ad" a few to my apartment.

I know that eventually I will have a D-Blue, and I recently packed away the National Geographic that tells the story of J. Cameron's Rolex inspiring descent.

What did people think of Rolex when these posters were made? Was it looked at as simply a tool, or did it have some of the prestige, and luxury branding it has today? I want to think Rolex was viewed as a luxury item in the 60's as it is today.

The ads have a slight arrogance to them that I kinda love

At that time Rolex were real tool watches with some spice of luxury. Divers were actually using them for real dives. Also, taking into account inflation factor they were really reasonably priced and were more affordable to general public. Nowadays there are not many people who can afford spending more than USD 8,000 for Sub. Also, if i go to diving and my life depends on tools that I am going to use, I will always choose a good diving computer instead of Rolex.

If you have more such adverts, please share in this thread - it is vary interesting to take a look at history.

Not quite the same.

It was a different time altogether. The world was a totally different place.
Peoples imagination was inspired by more tangible things and life in the world was of a more practical existence with different values.
It was the decade that brought us the space age, free love and some of the best music played on real instruments by real musicians.

Now days I think people are kidding themselves a lot more and divorced from reality in general.

I always liked the one where the Submariner watch was depicted in a Submarine as worn by an officer and a periscope in the frame.

Great ads. Great posts. There is a bit of haughtiness and a bit of swagger to the ads. Much like the old bond films. But if you can pull it off ....
