Paris & London Watch Shopping?

Hi All,

I will be heading to Paris and London for holiday and would like to do a little watch shopping/hunting. I am in the market for a Cartier Tank Basculante Mecanique (refs 2390 or 2391), so used/vintage shops are more on my list. I will also be heading to Lyon for a couple of days!

Any recommendations welcomed.

Cheers and thank you in advance!

For used/vintage shop at lyon you can visit Maier vintage and Cresus. Both are in the downtown.

You need to make your way to Antoine de Macedo for no other reason to see the Rolex in a goldfish bowl in the window. They have a good collection of Vintage Rolex. They are vintage specialists but carry new and are at 28 Rue Madame, 75006 Paris.

Catch the Metro to the Tuileries and head through to Place Vendome and you'll find all the big brands there. Rolex AD's don't have much to offer.

Went to London last weekend, for the first time in like 10 years. Wore my SD43 and went to Watches of Switzerland and Rolex by Harrod’s.

Looked around the cases. Just the typical stuff and a couple of Yatchmaster IIs.

That's the story here in London nowadays :(

It's pretty dry. You might see a few Explorers and the odd Milgauss if you're lucky.

For new: Watches of Switzerland in Oxford Street. One of the nicest branches. Joseph is the man. https://www.watches-of-switzerland.co.uk/oxford-street/

For old: Watch Club in the Royal Arcade: https://www.watchclub.com

Have a great time. London is fab!

Thank you all for the responses!

Are there any safety concerns in regards to wearing watches in Paris / Brittany / Lyon?

London -

ADs - Wempe (Bond St.), Watches of Switzerland (multiple locations, but the one on Regent St. is insane), Harrods

Greys + Vintage - Burlington Arcade: Somlo (Omega), David Duggan, Vintage Watch Co. (Rolex), Armour Winston, HD Unique, Almar (AP, Richard Mille, Urwork etc); Greys Antique Market

Enjoy

Well if you are going to Paris, and want a Cartier, what about the main store near the Arch. I bet they have some stock of watches.

Selfridges watch room is well worth a look and close enough to Bond Street/Burlington Arcade you may as well check it out.

Good list of used stores, also Austin Kaye, Watchclub, Watchcentre and Watchfinder, you can check their websites for stock first.

I’m walking all over Paris in my YG Sub, so I’d say, nah, no worries.

Heathrow airport has a ton of places as well in their terminals. Last time we were there I purchased a black bay black in house at Watches of Switzerlsnd.

Enjoy. It’s a great town.

Behind Notre Dame there is a bridge to a small Island called Il St Louis. Cross the bridge and you’ll see a restaurant called St Regis. Go in, order a steak and a cocktail they call the “PornStar”. It’ll knock your socks off and you can toast your purchases.

The basement of Bon Marche Dept store is watch territory.

Did you get to Macedo’s?

I do sometimes wonder about Americans' view of us in Europe.

If you are near Notre Dame try to eat at Tour d'Argent for its world famous Canard a la Presse.

You have different shops auround , if you are looking for a vintage rolex , better then macedo who is quite expensive , you can have a look at :
https://euroartcollection.com/fr/
Or https://www.collection-heure.be/fr
Or https://www.montres-modernes.com
If you find something interesting , don't hesitate to bargain , you can usually get 10 to 20% Off with some Cash..
Hope it will help

Merci beaucoup everyone! Such nice little tips.

Definitely have my eyes set on a Tank Basculante (the only watch dial that looks right with roman numerals in my humble opinion) !

Apologies to the Europeans for my questions pertaining to safety! I read too many pick pocket stories during my research =X

In the city of lights and what a time it is to be alive.
It’s been raining quite a bit but the sun is finally out!

Apologies - it’s not a Rolex but I had to report back! I’m absolutely besotted with my first Cartier.

Congrats on your beautiful Cartier

If you haven’t been to London yet, make sure you go to Burlington arcade, if only for the window shopping. It’s amazing (and expensive)!

I’m not American, but we do hear a lot of stories about targeted watch thefts in places like London and Barcelona. Add that to unfamiliarity with which parts of the city one is visiting is safe and which are more dangerous, and the fact that most American downtowns are more unsafe than suburbs, (which seems to be the opposite in Europe and Canada) and it's probably a bit understandable. Add all that to the fact that outside of murder, Europe and Canada have similar levels of violent and property crime to the US, and I think it’s pretty understandable.
