We run this sport under the most stringent and exacting application of a set of documented rules......that is, until our Race Director decides to conjure a new rule during the final lap, of the final race of the world championship!

Verstappen's Kamikaze style of driving, will probably continue, until a driver is seriously injured or worse.
Then, all the, wise after the event pundits will come out of the woodwork, wring their hands and say he should have been censured earlier.
Max knows that, but for the safety car incident, the race was Lewis'. I don't suppose for one minute that his youthful arrogance will allow him to reflect on a slightly hollow victory.
I do miss Charlie Whiting, God bless him.

Lewis and his family behaved impeccably post race.

The FIA couldn't change the results, Red Bull had already printed all of the WDC t-shirts...

This type of BS all season would not have happened it Charlie Whiting were still Race Director. Hopefully Masi loses his job. He's been a shit show since he started. Masi awarded the victory and WDC to Verstappen.

You get it if you worked for it and earned it..with Team work.
Max didn't just 'earn' it because of time.. He and the team worked like hell to get there.
Tho not a fan of Max..Red Bull stepped up and not only matched, but beat Mercedes and Hamilton. No easy feat over these past years.
Many other teams were dominate in their days... - Just another 'changing-of-the-guard', this year.

Hollow victory . I guess he can reflect on his 10 win season to hamiltons 8. I don’t know how hollow a victory can get when they made certain choices like the 2 stop and it happened to pay off. Yes, he was toast without the safety car, but that’s how these things work. He outperformed Hamilton all year, and it played into his hand today.

Hamiltons incredible but got a little unlucky at the wrong time today. That pretty much sums up the 2021 season.

Agreed, and every team works very VERY hard. Drivers have much training / coaches, PR / sponsor events to gladhand... teams have to engineer and monitors... Totally agree being in the circus is a feat in and of itself BIG TIME.

Max, and yes the team, earned it.

Next year I hope for new surprises. Can we bring back Brawn GP team?

What a season, what a race, what an ending…

Saw it, have fully read the decisions and conclude that:
1- Even if all 8 lapped cars had been waved around (instead of just the 5 that were between HAM & VER)…
2- VER would have still been directly behind HAM upon restart…
3- The race would have ended as it did on track.

I didn’t have a dog in that hunt…just my 2¢

Would they have got that done and get the safety car in. At what point in the lap does the safety car have to announce it is coming in, otherwise has to do another lap.

And also doesn't the safety car wait much longer after the cars unlap themselves or at least another lap.

Mercedes decisión not to pit is based on previous similar incidents. So it's the inconsistency that's the issue.

Not true. The SC would've had to do another lap thus ending the race under SC.

Listen and watch Toto during the last lap. It’s hilarious. Amazing meme content. MB won the constructors though.

I didn’t look at where the 3 lapped cars were (those further back) which weren’t waved around. So can’t answer that question.

Red Bull’s management (no, not the team - the real Red Bull) had a cagey argument, “…any does not mean all…”

I know many here criticized Masi on this. But I want to explain something that may have been missed. He didn’t allow lapped cars to pass the SC at the outset of the Full Course Yellow period for safety’s sake. So he needed to hustle them around as soon as it was safe. I surmise there wasn’t going to be time to do all 8 and still allow SC to come in.

You could be right. Didn’t look at telemetry. Have you had a chance to look at that or not? Haven’t seen reports on that point thus far.

Still can’t make excuses for the last race, last lap, etc. but in AZB, max had fluke tire incident otherwise would have taken 7-9 points (Ham would likely have finished 3rd, though he locked up and lost the points). Leading up to GBR, Max was dominant over Mercedes. If he survived lap one, would have likely earned another 7 points. Max still won a ton of races.

Luck is a large element of sports, but even as more of a HAM fan, I appreciate that Max won.

Just hate how it ended and all the excuses it gives Max haters. Dude is a serious driver, love or hate him.

Wonder if Netflix Season4 crew got some choice video inside RB & MB garages, offices, etc.

Would really make for huge audience methinks.

No confirmed debut in 2022…but if the series sticks to its prior debut window, compared to the first 2022 F1 race, then we should see that either March 4th or 11th. Prior season drops were on a Friday.

yeah worst way to end it is really all it is, because neither driver did anything wrong. i don't think anyone can argue that max didn't deserve it because if he didn't then it wouldn't be a tie up until the last race but i definitely think lewis had the win in the bag and got unlucky at the worst possible time. hopefully there are some repercussions to the FIA

watching the live reaction of horner during the last lap made me feel happy for him too. kinda felt like he's max's dad lol

class act by lewis post race and hopefully he's not retiring so we can see where this goes. would love to see him win 8 and retire

Did you notice that MSC pushed LAT off course while battling side by side, thus loading dust, marbles, clag onto LAT tires and then in next turn complex the rear came around.

So LAT didn’t cause an accident but was compromised due to a bad outcome from battling MSC.

Just squaring the Haas predominant role leading to the incident. So the Italians did it!

But I do get the joke

I couldn't watch the race today but read and heard all about it.  Now that I've had a chance to watch the race, it was crazier than I imagined!  Mercedes and Hamilton had it locked up, but when Latifi hit the wall and brought out the safety car, all I could think about was how Lewis' luck had finally run out.  My mind IMMEDIATELY went back to Interlagos 2008 when Felipe Massa had the race and WDC locked up until it started to rain at the very end of the race and Timo Glock was stuck on dry tires.  Lewis passed Glock on the last corner of the last lap of the year for 5th place but 1 point ahead of Massa for his 1st WDC.  Heartbreak for Felipe, stroke of luck for Lewis but that is live sports... you never know what's going to happen.

Great pit wall strategy by Red Bull today and they were rewarded for taking risks whilst Mercedes played it more conservative even though they had the outright speed.

At the end of a long 22 race year, the best driver won the championship and the best car won the constructor's title.

Conflicted emotions as I'm happy to see Honda win at the end of their latest stint in F1 but sad that they are leaving while at this point.  My how far they've come from a "GP2" engine as coined by Fernando Alonso to now.

Perhaps most surprising is the composure of class shown by Hamilton in the aftermath.  It looked like he took his time to process all that happened while still in the cockpit and was magnanimous in defeat.  It's great to see both fathers speaking with their adult sons.  What a 2021 season!!!

Moving forward, I'm sure 2022 will bring new players to the front and those teams that elected to spend their budget money on next year's car (Ferrari, HAAS, etc) will come out fighting and competing for podiums.  Can't wait to see the behind the scene footage on Netflix, "Drive to Survive" as well.

With 5 laps to go LH was 5 seconds ahead and MV was losing time.

Then there was an incident.

Next thing we see is MV with soft tyres alongside LH with one lap to go.

This was a complete travesty and MV had no right to claim a win.

The stewards and the race director should be tossed out.

The end of this race was a joke and.made a fool of everyone who watched it and all who follow F1.

While i don’t agree with a few parts, i do agree with LH being at least 5 seconds ahead and the race essentially over. I’m a max fan and i didn’t see any way he was getting in done with just a few to go. But, Lewis has every opportunity to make a tire change and decided against it. Obviously the SC changed everything.

It does seem that a crash in the last 10 laps or so could derail a leader that’s substantially ahead. You get a full SC and that gap disappears instantly. I think that portion of the sport needs work. An insider that’s in the back of the pack and derails the entire race should have have a substantial impact on the leaders, IMO.
