I have not yet taken any action, will likely attempt to contact the former owner because, as we have discussed, there really isn't anything to lose. I didn't post photos because it is NOT Rolex, but will do so once I have resolved this to my satisfaction. At the time I bought it, a simple, time-only GP was not a super-desirable watch, it's entirely possible that it was donated to a rummage sale, the cash value was probably a whopping $35 US, if running (this one was NOT). They've gone up a bit since then, but on a really, really good day, I don't think it could possibly be worth more than $800. I put it in the vintage forum because the value of the watch has, IMHO, little bearing on the admittedly-minor moral issue. I don't have a receipt, I think I paid $20 US for it. I don't mind giving it to the man, if he asks. I will attempt contact. Then, I'll tell all.

Did you want to sell it to him or just give it to him?

You, of course, don't know that. It is entirely possible that the watch was donated, given away, or sold and nobody gave a thought to taking off an engraving.

I have a couple of watches that were engraved that i bought from reputable shops. I trust that the shop got it through legitimate channels and so i simply removed the engravings..

Good for you. For what it's worth, I think it's the right decision.
