probably a picture with visible superior written might help...
In any case this is not an original mark VI red sub dial, It may be repainted (as I think) or service...

the bezel is a mid '80 and even the crown is a service one...

Can you help me understand what looks wrong about the crown?

Nothing "wrong" as it is a 703 crown, and not the 702 which would have come with the red sub. It was used as a service replacement for the 702 crown when they wore out.

Nice quick input!
Curious if you have an archive on how to spot inserts of different years as they progressed.
Impressive info!

Better to ask first than a month after buying it.

It's not a good photo, for a start.

The dial it most 'resembles' is a red service dial, but the ones I have seen, only have "SWISS" printed at the bottom, not "SWISS-T<25"

Looks dodgy to me. It shouldn't have cream 'patina' either, and matching hands?!.... And look how long/large the red text is, in relation to the depth rating.

Here's an example of a genuine red service dial from ROLEX. Pic by 10pastten/Eric Ku
