Thoughts on this Blue Tudor Sub 94110
Hi,
A friend of a good friend is offering to sell me his blue Tudor Sub 94110 for a reasonable price. What a guy! He purchased it from eBay from a reputable seller that claims the watch is 100%, insert, hands, and dial are original. Lugs look to be in decent shape and may have been polished lightly in the past. No service history. The serial number is 845xxx. Which is a birth year watch for me. If I proceed I'll probably get it serviced and pressure tested at ABC the next time I'm in socal unless anyway has a good recommendation for a watchmaker in the sf bay area. I'll try to get a better pic of the dial. The camera on my Nexus blows. Any thoughts and feedback on this piece is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk |

Acne dial. Some love 'em and some hate 'em. I am not a fan. It is an unstable dial which will continue to degrade as you expose it to wear. Hands look original as does the insert. I thought this was a 9411/0. The 94110s don't have the acne issue. I think this watch sold last week on eBay so you can check pricing there.

5250 was the cost. I think case is virgin. This is as nice an acne dial as I have seen but the dial is the killer for me. Kind of like the nicest rusty classic car.....looks great but has rust and will continue to get worse.

You'll need to post better and clearer pics of the dial, but it looks OK.
Doesn't look too blistered to me, from those blurry photos...

Looks like a pretty fair specimen and depending on the price, I would personally pull the trigger. Guards are still in good shape and the 702 is nice to still see there. Case has been polished but not overly done. You can still see wear marks from the end links on the underneath. Its most certainly a blue as the black did not usually tend to flake or pit or whatever term you like to use. This was due to paint issues at the factories. The insert has faded really nicely and goes well with the hands. Those have aged slightly lighter and though may have been replaced at some point, it isn't uncommon for these to patina at different rates. The dial is in good shape regardless of the blistering and has seen plenty of time in the sun IMO as you can see the script turning a slight yellow as opposed to the usual crisp white normally seen. Nice tophat crystal with no real cracks or anything that I can see in these pics. Overall, a really fine example in my opinion.

Its only the latter dials (not made by Beyler) that held up better. The font is also distinctively different between the two. |

I have noticed an equal number of each color. Seems the flaw did not discriminate. Does anyone know of a dial archive so we can see the different nuances between the different years and models?

Here's a better pic. I just got a new Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Lol. Anyways the watch is mine now. This is my first foray into vintage and I'm pretty happy with it and glad to finally find a birth year watch. Thanks for the feedback! Sent from my SM-N930V using Tapatalk |

It's a nice watch! I like a bit of wear on my vintage. I agree that the rot seems common in the 7021s and less in the 9411s. I don't note that the blue dials fare better. It seems unusual to find super clean 7021s. Generally when I see a very clean blue sub, I just assume she's a 9411

Insert and bezel look good to me, as does the dial of course. All the replacement blue dials I have seen have issues that your dial does it have. Plus you have rot. That cannot be replicated so I prefer it so I KNOW I have a genuine dial. Plus the fakes all have "singer" on the back and singer did not make these dials... |

I have yet to see any photos (or better in person) of a rotted black dial. |

And by the way, some of you may have noticed my blue has no hands. I need a minute hand if you have one, and also an insert (and a old 125 top hat but that is less important). I prefer one not as faded as the OP's but will consider any genuine one.

Let's not fall out over rot. It is well documented that both black and blue dials were prone. Google throws up images too.
Congrats on a cool birth year. I know how you feel, here is my 1974: We are still learning until the day we die. Let's spread the knowledge. |
