Air King Explorer Precision
Despite owning a 114270 Explorer I love the look of the Explorers that predate the 14270 reference. I'm particular a fan of the tritium 3-6-9 dial. There is a jeweller in London that has had an Explorer Precision in stock for c.12 months. I tried this on some time ago, where the dealer informed me that it is an Air King with an Explorer service dial and hands.
Given the prices of 1016's I thought the price on offer for this watch was reasonable - c.£3,500. However, I know very little about the Air King/Explorer conversions, and I am reluctant to contemplate purchasing until I know more. Clearly given the price differential many people must stay clear of these watches. Is the simple explanation that many collectors will steer clear of service dials and changed parts? Given that the 1016 are never likely to be in my price range I am tempted to do my research and find out more. If people have any information on these models I would be most grateful. |

Rolex Air-King ref. 5500 £800-1,500, plus an after-market Explorer 5500 dial and hand-set <£300...not unsurprising the watch has been sitting in a shop window for more than a year!
