Incoming red sub!
My first Rolex was a new 2016 Explorer II that I had for about a year and sold when I discovered the Sea Dweller anniversary SD43. I found one through a grey dealer in mid 2017 and absolutely love it. It fits perfectly on my 7.5" wrist and the balance and larger bracelet combined with new movement is just perfect.
I started reading up on the history of Rolex and the red writing on the older models. Which led me to discover both the DRSD and the Red Sub. I was hooked! I really love old stuff anyway and became obsessed with the thought of finding a birth year red sub (72) to go along with the SD43. I'd have an old Sub and a new Sea Dweller. It's been a very fun 6+ months doing all the reading and research and learning all about what makes these vintage time pieces special. Obsessively watching the forums, ebay, chrono24 and Facebook groups to find that diamond in the ruff. With the red sub, it was all about the original dial and insert as well as the open 6/9 date wheel and nice not too polished case. What really got me excited though was the unbelievably beautiful patina's I'd see on some of these! The creamy matching markers, hands and pearl that just made the watch look so special and "vintage". I'd find one with a nice dial but it would have a service insert. Nope keep looking. Or I'd find one without the correct date wheel or worse find the perfect one complete with box and punched papers that would be faaaar outside my budget. Finally I found THE ONE! It was owned by a guy in Denmark (hi Anders!) that was looking to sell to fund the purchase of another watch. He had loved and cared for it for many years. Not only did the watch have an amazing matching patina, great looking dial and original insert but he also had the original box and manual (plus two bracelet's 9315 and 93150)! Once it arrived I instantly fell in love with the "old" feel of the case and bracelet and of course the red submariner letters. I'm still getting used to how much smaller it wears compared to the SD43 but it's a good juxtaposition to have it in rotation. Someday would love to own a DRSD or even an old panda Daytona but for now I'm set and happy with the two red's! |

IMO I think it is a much nicer watch than the SD43. Great buy.
