They can and will track everything you still do online - even after deleting your account:

Facebook isn’t content to only learn all that it can from registered users, as the company has also been tracking people who haven’t even had a Facebook accounts in years. In light of the Cambridge Analytica revelations, many Facebook users decided to delete their accounts, with the #DeleteFacebook movement trending around the world. If you plan to ditch your Facebook account though, that won’t stop the service from continuing to track you and collect data.

That’s actually true for anyone using a browser - Google does it, Amazon, Yahoo, etc all do it - you will be tracked. Private browsing works a bit, and never accepting cookies, but most users aren’t aware of taking those precautions.

You are correct. It takes effort, money, and knowledge to avoid tracking.

Very true and good point ! I would imagine any interaction via web can do the same.

You have a very big Facebook account Ken. You have Instagram. You installed it on your phone, they know everything.

Same applies to WhatsApp which everyone and their mother has.

Just because you don’t have a “Facebook” doesn’t mean they don’t have you.

I deactivated my account about 7 years ago. I didn’t do it because of privacy reasons (Skynet already knows everything about us). I just didn’t find it interesting anymore and I didn’t want to be forced into being “friends” with some family members.

I used to have an account but it was too distracting so, i handed the login details to my wife for her to control.

I had about 500 "friends," but most of my feed was trash. Ads, boosted posts and posts I'd seen weeks ago. It became a total waste of time.

I might have to start sending out Christmas cards again. :)

I don't have it & this latest fiasco just confirms I need to not worry about joining. Keeps life a bit simpler. If your friends need to tell you something, they will.

I don’t post on Facebook except beer for trade. I don’t post on IG and I don’t have whatsapp. I’m 30. I must be an alien

What I did do was sell FB stock wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to soon. I had a huge projection bias and thought the product was in decline. Boy was that an error.

I sold my stock way to soon also (argh!!) but if I had shares today I’d sell them quick.

Right from square one I could never see anything worthwhile that I was going to get from FB, Twitter, or any of that rubbish. I have avoided having data on my phone and I have made it clear to friends and family that they can ring me, text me, or email me, but that is the range of options.
My exposure via Google and my Forums is already greater than I would like. The world is a very small place full of ruthless people. That's not paranoia - that's reality.

I would have deleted mine long ago, but being a business owner, Facebook is potentially a "destroyer of businesses".

I had a Facebook page setup for my business years ago. Logo, address, info, etc... Wasn't very active with it.

When the page was around 5 years old I stumbled upon another facebook page for my company. Logo, my pictures of the interior exterior etc... Adress some apartment in Helsinki (60miles away) no moderation whatsoever etc...

Well, this page was illegal in my point of view and I think most of you would agree...?

All of the info on it wasn't bad, but a lot of disinformation on it, not to mention the ruthless use of my material. And the potential for an angry customer to go berserk or an envy competitor to use against me.

Enter a 2 year "war" to shutdown that other page.

Perhaps easier in the US where you can basically sue whomever quite easily. Not the same in Europe, and facebook (croockbook) knows this.

After being on their a55 like a crazy person for about two years, they finally (but slowly) started to merge the two pages (mine and the rogue one, took 6 months to merge. ).

Today there is to my knowledge only one Facebook page for my business, thank god.

Facebook was such a total bastard trough it all. Not one communication back to me.

I would smile and dance if Facebook went bankrupt and Zuckerberg with it.

So... Can I quit facebook? No. Not as long as Facebook matters. It's the perfect crooked platform for competitors, or in my case it may have been Facebook themselves who started the Rogue version of my business.

So much of your life is online these days FB is a drop in the bucket every major web browser or search engine is doing exactly what FB is doing.

True.

Most of the personal info I’ve given FB is just made up though. Other than my name, my date of birth and my wife’s name it is all nonsense I made up to get a laugh out of my friends. I’m hardly ever on there though and I don’t friend people I don’t know.

It's been about five weeks since I deleted my Facebook account, and I missed it so little that I also deleted LinkedIn, Doximity, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp. I still maintain a Twitter account following news and sports organizations, as I find breaking news appears faster on Twitter than on any other media type. I really don't miss any of the social media platforms, and looking back, I'm mildly amazed at the amount of time I spent reading and posting to them.

I read a funny line a few days ago..

If people are surprised to learn that they don’t own their data on Facebook, wait until they find out they don’t actually own the money in their bank account

By the mid-1990's I was already so burned-out on internet porn that when I finally crashed and burned I did so hard I've never had the energy to join MySpace, FB, Instagram, Twitter, etc. since. Hell, I don't even know what any of that stuff does and too lazy to care.

My wife talked me into a Facebook account and it only lasted a very short time. I could not take the bombardment of information and friend requests. It is now gone and I suspect Facebook will be also.
