The Art of the Hunt
Longtime lurker here, suddenly with the ability to purchase a new Rolex. I was recently at my local AD and asked about any stainless sport models and from the back he brought out a new BLNR. I was overcome with joy, until I tried it on. It looked too small. I was deflated. I inquired about the SD43 and he politely informed me they do not have any and the waiting list was not taking additional names.
I have very little experience with high end timepieces but I have tracked down some very elusive new cars with great success. My question is are there any techniques to finding your desired watch from an AD without just being lucky? My AD has 7 locations. Should I try asking at each location? I purchased a datejust for my wife's push present 3 years ago, so I do have a purchase history with them. Are there any AD's that might ship? I hate the fact this isn't an easy process but I know not to get discouraged. I really don't want to get one from a grey dealer. I know there is no real difference in terms of the watch but isn't buying your first Rolex part of the experience. Any way, if some of you could share a story of how you overcame the disparity/difficulty of finding one of these unicorns I would be grateful. |

Too small? how big are your wrists? I'm at almost 7.5 and its perfect. Way more comfy than my Deep-Blue (which is comfy btw).

I went into the AD in Daytona Beach, FL back in October and they had one sat in the case.
If you put in some leg work, you should be able to find one with little or no wait. |

My local AD called me yesterday to tell me that they had 3 professional models in, one of them being the SD43. I went to to check it out and was impressed of how well it feels. I called today and it was GONE!!!

I called a few ADs, didn’t have any luck finding the unicorn (SD43). Prior to that I had only ever bought a Sub from an AD so didn’t have the buying power a lot of big buyers in the DC area have. I wanted the SD43 so bad I ended up buying from a trusted seller, don’t regret it for a second.

Go ask in person. Don't expect an honest answer over the phone unless you already have a relationship.
